What is the Difference Between a Thread Lift and a Suture Suspension During a SMAS Facelift?

What is the Difference Between a Thread Lift and a Suture Suspension During a SMAS facelift procedure? Is there another (or longer lasting) way to secure the SMAS in the neck and face? Is this something a patient should be concerned about when deciding on a facial plastic surgeon?

A: Difference Between a Thread Lift and a SMAS Facelift

A thread lift is a barbed suture repair and if done alone will last weeks to a few months only. It is not as secure as direct suture suspension during a SMAS facelift procedure. I would be quite concerned about doing a thread lift suture suspension only of the SMAS. It is much better to use direct sutures with permanent sutures if performing  a  suspension or SMAS plication while doing a facelift to give you increased longevity.

Will Removing Threads 4 Years Post Thread Lift Cause Jowl to Sag?

I am having a neck lift done and have had a Thread Lift for 4 years now. My doctor wants to remove the threads in the neck and jowl area while doing the Neck lift.

However, he will not be doing a Face lift, only a Neck lift. Will my face drop in the jowl area if he does this? Usually, people who remove the threads get the Face lift. I don't need one right now and think it’s because of the Thread Lift. Help!

A: Thread Lift Thread Removal 4 Years After Procedure

It is unlikely for anything to change if the threads are removed 4 years after the original procedure. I would agree with the other physicians though about the necessity for their removal. In most cases, the threads are only removed due to persistent pain or extrusion of the threads through the skin.

Removing the Threads from Thread Lift

How can the thread lift threads be removed? Can you pull them out or do they have to be removed with a facelift?

A: Removal is Possible

Exactly what is required is dependent on the type of threads which you have inserted. In general, removal can be accomplished without a facelift but this can be a very difficult process. In some patients, after the threads are removed, a facelift is necessary to obtain the results which the patient had before the threads are removed.
