my left breast nipple is dented. i've been ok with it, yet i saw a story in the news that it could be a sign of breast cancer. so now i am really scared! what's the cause of inverted nipples and is it something i need to get checked out right away?
Chronic nipple inversion is usually a benign condition for which repair can be performed, if desired.
New nipple inversion is sometimes a sign of breast cancer and requires medical evaluation, including physical examination by a general surgeon or plastic surgeon and breast imaging studies (mammography, sonography).
Last year I had a patient come to office for repair of a newly inverted nipple. Despite her resistance, I strongly recommended mammography. The mammogram demonstrated worrisome findings.
If you have a newly inverted nipple, seek consultation as soon as possible.
Can excessively protruding nipples be corrected by nipple surgery? I'm a 22 year old male and mine noticeably stick out. I think it's embarrassing.
Nipple reduction surgery can be performed under local anesthesia through small incisions that are generally inconspicuous.
Men who have undergone nipple reduction usually describe greater confidence when wearing a T-shirt or a swimsuit.
Is this procedure common and or expensive? What is the average cost? How long after can you expect to go back to work? Any reasons why one would be denied? Can they make it so you have a flush or almost no nipple at all? Could it be as little as possible especially in the outward diretion?
Men with protruding nipples describe self-consciousness when wearing a bathing suit or light T-shirt.
Male nipple reduction is performed under local anesthesia. Laughing gas may also be used, if desired. A chevron-shaped (think of the Chevron logo) removal of excess tissue is performed, and the incision is closed with absorbable sutures. I generally recommend leaving some residual nipple projection, though the nipples can be completely flattened, if desired. Surgical cost is about $1000 for both nipples.
