Can You Botox Lips to Get a Plumper Lip?

Is Botox ok for lip plumping? I want fuller lips and I've heard the most about Botox.

A: Botox and Lips

Yes, you can place a small amount of Botox (usually 2 units per injection) in the muscle that causes the lips to pucker.  This causes relaxation of the muscle, thereby allowing more of the pink part of the lip (true lip) to show and minimizing fine lines above the lip (smoker's lines).  Usually 3-5 units total would be placed in this area (small amount).

What Are the Differences Between Restylane & Juvederm/Juvederm Ulta Plus in Lip Injections?

What are the differences between Restylane & Juvederm/Juvederm Ulta Plus in lip injections? I’ve tried Restylane and had great results, debating whether to try Juvederm/Juvederm Ulta Plus. My main questions are: Which lasts longer? Which has a shorter down time? (I was pretty swollen about 2 days with Restylane) Which has the better track record with FDA and/or any other nationally recognized program? I know both are pretty much the same but does one tend to give a different look/result?

A: Restylane vs Juvederm for Lips

Both Restylane and Juvederm Ultra/Ultra Plus last about the same amount of time in the lips.  They are both FDA-approved to last up to 12 months.  Because we are constantly speaking, eating, and moving these muscles around the mouth, filler in the lip tends to wear off a little quicker than when it is placed in a less mobile location.  The down time is similar between Restylane and Juvederm Ultra/Ultra Plus.  Both have the same risks/side effects.  The most common side effects are bruising, redness and swelling.  These should all resolve completely.  Many expert injectors prefer and recommend Juvederm for a softer, more natural feel in the lips.

Options for Defining a 'Flat' Upper Lip

I have a problem with my lips. The bottom one is fine but the top lip is pretty flat and has no shape to it. It does not have the youthful/sexy indent or definition. Basically it is almost as flat as my bottom lip. Is there a surgery to permanently change this....I am content with the size of my lips but not the shape. Would I be a canidate for a small lip implant?

A: Shaping the Lips: Lip lift combined with a lip augmentation

The upper lip has 3 defined elevations where the lower lip has 2. The lower lip should always be larger than the top however many patients have a thin upper lip, either they were born that way or through aging. This thinning or elongation can cause flattening of the upper lip. This can be easily corrected with a combination of fillers and possible surgical shaping. I would have to see your upper lip before recommending an individual plan, but start with a hyaluronic acid gel filler like Juvederm, which can be used to shape the lip and add volume to it. After you have seen what this does I would add a permanent lip lift which can shape and elevate the lip with a small incision under the nasal sill. A graduated approach would be important so you can decide what you like and remember that some of these steps are reversible. Permanent lip implants have a high rate of scarring and stiffness, and the last thing you need is a stiff upper lip! Let me know if this helps. Dr. Trussler
