I Read That Fat Cells Come Back After Liposuction and Tummy Tuck. Is Weight Loss Harder?

I'm considering a tummy tuck with liposuction. I read the results of a study that the fat cells redistribute after such procedures. My question is do these procedures make weight loss more difficult after surgery? Is there a correlation to the weight of the fat cells removed and weight gain after surgery? What is the optimum bmi of body fat procedure for a tummy tuck? Can Is it possible to achieve optimum results from a tummy tuck with out liposuction of areas such as the flanks?

A: Weight loss associated with tummy tuck and liposuction

Thank you for your question.  Let's dispell some myths.

Liposuction and tummy tuck, as with other body contouring procedures, and intended to reshape the body you have.  The procedures help give you an improved shape, body sculpting if you will. They do not usually cause a significant amount of weight loss in and of themselves. The fat does not redistribute.

Also, they do not substitute for weight loss nor do they prevent future weight gain.

If you get a tummy tuck and/or liposuction then your body will have a new shape.  If you are good about maintaining a healthy diet and exercise, then it is likely you will have some longlasting results.  If you are not good about exercise and do not eat healthy meals, then it is likely that your results will not last very long at all.

The surgery is only part the battle, the other part is your responsibility. I hope this helps and I wish you well.

Is It Safe to Have a Full Tummy Tuck Combined with Lipo of the Full Back Within a Week of Each Other?

the surgeon i am considering suggested that iam able to preform my procedures within a week of each other

A: Full tummy tuck and full liposuction of the back

Thank you for your question. When back/flank liposuction is combined with tummy tuck, it is usually limited to the lower back only.  Care must be taken to ensure that the upper tummy skin and tissue has sufficient blood supply to survive.  I don't know of any scientific literature that state separating the two by one week will make a difference.  If you came to see me and wanted full upper and lower back lipo, and also tummy tuck, I would recommend you separate the procedures by about 6-8 weeks.  Up to you and your surgeon.  To be sure what is right for you, see at least two or more board-certified plastic surgeons in your area for a full and complete evaluation to make sure you are a good candidate and that it is safe for you to have surgery.  I hope this helps.

The Compression Garment They Placed on Me After Surgery Did Not Cover All Areas That Were Treated W/ Lipo. Should I Worry?

I am very black w/ red marks and swollen in those areas (lower hips) It is very painful in those areas. Should I be concerned? What can I do to help with the swelling since the garment isn't compressing it well enough in those areas? I had full abdominoplasty w/ muscle repair & lipsuction of the hips/flanks.

A: Garment Suggestion after Lipo

The lipo garment provides support and many say they are more comfortable with those treated areas covered. Do you have any elastic girdles that would cover? If not, you can go to a department store and purchase Spanx or something like it. We normally recommend people switch to that after a day or so wearing the tighter and less comfortable garment that we supply.
