One of the most tragic aspects of human existence is our inherent inability to learn from past mistakes which results in REPEATEDLY making the same costly mistakes. How many times did people vote in dictators which then cost the lives of millions only to repeat these choices? How many abused women senselessly choose the same abusive relationships or an alcoholic chooses to repeat his mistakes?

This happens in Medicine as well. To understand the sadness of Silicone as a soft tissue filler you either must be in your 60's or 70's as a surgeon or to be a keen student of Plastic Surgery history and appreciate the irony. Silicone has been tried as a filler in the mid and late 40's and failed. High grade versions of silicone were tried in the 50's and failed. Medical grade silicone was tried in the 60's and by the 70's it was found to be disastrous. But not until thousands of patients ended with "collagen overproduction" (in Plain English HEAVY SCARRING) in addition to collection of silicone "siliconomas'). And yet - it has been re-introduced one more time about 15 years ago in "micro droplet" form used mostly by dermatologists.

I would advise you to see the ?doctor who injected it and ask him/her what would smooth these lumps and what his/her back up plan would be if plan A does not work.  In reality, you MAY need these lumps to be removed. This means permanent scars, potential depressions to say nothing about additional costs.

Get several opinions before having anything done. As bad as things are now, they CAN get worse.

Effects of Silicone on the Thick Skin at Nose Tip

my nose is extremely thick nd i been told no amount of cartilage crafting or grafts will help.i know SI is disliked because it can lead to infection and more importantly, skin thinning.i have to ask,is this such a bad thing for a thick skin person like myself?would the idea of "prepping" my skin with an SI implant, hoping in time my skin will thin, then heading for a revision later in life save a surgeon from having to "defat" my thick skin, which is what almost seems mandatory with my skin

A: Nose Augmentation with Silicone Implants

The skin of the nose does NOT have a uniform thickness; it is thickest at the tip and thinner along the upper nose. I disagree with the comment that "no amount of cartilage crafting or grafts will help" as I agree with the simplistic concept that a large silicone implant would predictably "prep" your nose for cartilage grafts in the future.

There is no doubt that silicone nasal implants are better tolerated in certain ethic groups than others. They are commonly used in Asia. But, the vast majority of these implants EVENTUALLY have to be removed due to irreparable skin thinning and ulceration as well as infection. I am not aware of American Plastic surgeons who recommend using these implants knowing their track record and the certainty that next time they see you, you will require a much more complex reconstructive operation.

Treating Dark Skin from Hip and Buttocks Silicone Injections?

Hello .. i am 33 yr old woman who had silcone injected into my hps and buttocks in 1995. i havent experienced any problems . on dizziness. etc. but i have experienced very dark skin in my hip area .. and not my buttocks. thee is no pain atall. only extremely dark area on both sides of my lower part of thighs. it has been dark since 1997. what should i do?

A: Correcting Darker Skin There is no telling why silicone injections which normally cause inflammation and intense scarring. While according to you, you have not experienced the lumpiness experienced by others the hyperpigmentation MAY be the result of the injections. I would consult a Dermatologist who could try you on several bleaching agents. There are several excellent agents that may normalize the pigmentation of your skin. Dr. Aldea
