When Skin is Cut off During a Body Lift, How Much is Fat and How Much is Lean Body Mass?

Through diet and exercise, I have gone from 48% body fat to 15% body fat. I am planning on a body lift over the summer, and had the goal of getting to 8% first (I'm a 34yo man, 6'0", muscular). Here's my question, I've been given estimates of a total weight loss of 20-30lbs during the surgery. How much of that is actual body fat, and how much is skin, connective tissue, etc.?

A: Amount and weight of Skin and Fat removed in a Body Lift operation

I know of no Plastic surgery colleague who bases the amount of excess skin and fat removal on a pre-set weight reduction goal. Nor do surgeons analyze the removed excess trunk skin and fat for their exact component parts. Many people who decide to change their life style by eating healthier and exercising become focused and driven in this goal. While it changes ther lives for the better it really does not help us as Plastic surgeons. When encountering people who underwent large volume weight losses we work with them on planning the best path for them to get rid of the excess skin reminding them of their long gone bodies and help bring out their new bodies by removing all excess skin. The weight of the skin, it's fat composition is immaterial. As a service to you, your surgeon surgeon surgeon would gladly weigh and photograph the skin and fat removed from you, if you so wish.

When is a Body Lift for Back Rolls Usually Done After Extreme Weight Loss?

Are there other surgeries or lifts that should be done before a body lift on the back? Why?

A: UPPER BACK Body Lift for Back Rolls After Extreme Weight Loss

Great question. Body contouring after massiove weight loss is best done in stages not only to make recovery easy but to get a better accuracy in customized contouring of the individual patient. While a lot of the procedures could be done in long "mega" surgical sessions followed by prolonged down time and recovery, people often find the step-wise approach much easier. (Contrast the inconvenience of having your whole home renovated at one time VS renovation of the kitchen followed a few months later by the master bathroom etc).

As regards the TIMING, it is best to address the lower portion of the abdomen and buttock before tackling the upper back where the folds originate from. I would recommend you have an extended abdominoplasty or a Fleur de Lis abdominoplasty with a buttock lift (either at the same time or staged). Once you heal and the results care be carefully evaluated, the upper back (and folds) can be lifted and smoothed. This can be combined with an Arm Lift procedure should you wish.

Good Luck.

Body Lift then Exercise?

Is it safe to lift weights right after a body lift? I'm undertaking a fairly heavy program of resistance training, and am worried lifting weights will pull my stitches. How long should I wait before lifting weights again? What kind of exercise will I be able to resume right after surgery?

A: Is it safe to lift weights right after a body lift?

Every Plastic surgeon will have a different opinion on WHEN it would be safe to resume excercises after a lower body lift. The reluctance is based on the fear of creating bleeding or fluid collections (seroma), wroud splitting open or sutures breaking leading to widening scars.

I prefer that my patients not raise their blood pressure for at least 4 weeks. When they rturn to exercising I ask that they do treadmill / stairmaster type cardio and no kicking or spinning for at least another 1-2 months to allow the body to scar better which will spread the pulling forces on more than just the stitches.

Ask your surgeon.
