How Much Weight Should I Lose Before Tummy Tuck?

32 Years Old Actual Weight 168 How Much Weight Should I Loose Before TT and Lipo

A: A Moderate, Stable Weight is More Important than Your Ideal Weight for Tummy Tuck +/- Liposuction

It is not necassary to lose weight down to a published ideal body weight (or BMI).  For many, this is unrealistic.  Excellent results can be obtained by experienced plastic surgeons when patients are at various weights.

However, there are some important points to make in order to have the best results.  First, you should not have liposuction and/or tummy tuck, then lose a large amount of weight (more than 10-15 pounds).  If you anticipate such a weight loss, achieve it before you have your surgery.  Second, if your surgeon determines that the majority of your tummy fat is internal (intra-abdominal), then skin tightening may be achieved but little improvement of a full, round tummy.  Finally, if you carry increased body fat, your tummy tuck will be most impressive in how it reduces hanging loose skin and fat in your lower abdomen.  Best wishes.

Can my Diastasis Recti Be Repaired Without Too Many Scars?

I have a bad case of DR, after two children. Am thinking of having one more before getting the surgery. However, I would like to know if I will have really bad scars afterwards. It would be so nice to actually wear a two piece, something I have not done since I was a teenager. Thanks.

A: Yes, there are excellent procedures available for repair of diastasis recti.

Dear 783466anon:  Yes, there are excellent procedures available for repair of diastasis recti.  You are correct to finish having children before you consider surgery.  Abdominal muscle toning may be worthwhile in the meantime.

Plastic surgeons strive to minimize scarring.  The abdominoplasty procedure is now done in a variety of ways to address individual patient's conditions and concerns.  Your photograph appears to show very lax abdominal muscle and fibrous support, which can improve with fascial plication, done during abdominplasty.

I suspect by your question that you would like a very small scar.  You should consult an experienced plastic surgeon for evaluation in-person, but from the photo I suspect that plication alone will leave a large amount of loose skin that will be addressed by removal low across the pubic and hip areas (under most bikinis).  A mini- or short-scar abdominoplasty may not be sufficient for you, but a well placed scar should allow you to consider a two-piece bathing suit looking much better than the current photograph.  Best wishes.

Can I Get a Tummy Tuck While Awake?

would any doctor actually do a tummy tuck while you're awake? What about a mini tummy tuck?

A: Safe anesthesia for tummy tucks

The simplest answer to your brief question is that yes, performing abdominoplasty / tummy tuck (including mini) under local anesthesia would be possible. Your question raises a number of other questions.

First, consider the training, board-certification, and experience of the surgeon performing the procedure. This is the most important factor in obtaining a good quality outcome. An experienced plastic surgeon would be best.

Second, consider the quality of the anesthesia provider. Is the surgeon suggesting being awake in order to enhance the quality of your result? Are cost considerations being weighted too highly? A board-certified MD anesthesiologist is the highest standard you can expect.

Next, you should expect that the procedure will be performed in an accredited surgical facility, whether an office-based, out-patient or hospital facility. Such facilities have a higher standard of safety and quality.

Do your research and choose carefully.
