Is There a Risk of Alloderm Causing Infection?

I understand that Alloderm comes from donor tissue. Does this create a risk of infection after surgery?

A: Alloderm and Infection

Alloderm itself will not increase your risk for infection after surgery. However, if you do experience an infection, it might become necessary to remove the Alloderm to treat it. This is true of virtually all surgical implants, and if your surgeon thinks that Alloderm will improve your chances for a good result, then I would have no qualms about using it.

Prophylactic Mastectomy 3 Months Ago - Why Do I Continue to Drain? Can It Be an Alloderm Reaction?

I am a 30 year old woman. In Sept. I had a prophylactic mastectomy with tissue expanders and alloderm. 8 weeks post op the bottom of my rt breast opened (not the incision) The skin turned purple and opened. The same started happening with the left. My ps removed the expanders thinking it was infection. No infection present. Removed drains after surgery and my skin opened again and is draining blood, alloderm and stitches. I have open wounds draining Surgery to remove alloderm is next week. Ideas?

A: Drainage after breast reconstruction

If you still have an open, draining wound  after the expanders have been removed, then I would suggest a return to the operating room for a complete exploration of the wound. If there is any non-viable tissue in the wound it must be removed. It may be that some or all of the Alloderm did not "take" and if this is the case, it could be the source of the problem.

Can Alloderm Be Used in the Face?

I understand it is a piece of tissue, like collagen. could it possibly be used in the chin to bring it out a bit or under the eyes for undereye hollows?

A: Alloderm not so good for volume

Alloderm is a very useful tool in the operating room, but it would not be my first choice for adding volume to re contour the face or any other area. It does provide an excellent framework where more structural integrity is needed, but very little in the way of volume. There are more reliable and less expensive ways to add volume, such as fat grafting.
