Will a Hot Compress on my Eyes Cause Restalyne in my Tear Troughs to Dissapate Faster?

I have dry eyes and my eye doctor says I should apply a warm compress to my eyes twice a day. I have had 2 vials of restalyne injected in my tear troughs and the improvement seems to only last 6 to 8 weeks. Thank you

A: Warm Compress will not affect fillers

Warm compresses will not impact the longevity of restylane.  In addition, there is very little risk of migration of the product, since at one week, the hyaluronic acid filler is well incorporated into the surrounding tissue in the dermis.

The short duration of your restylane is surprising, especially since you had "two vials injected".   In most of my patients, a little filler in this area goes a long way-- most patients need less than 0.5 cc (half a syringe) to get good results.  When injected properly to the tear trough area, restylane usually last closer to 9-12 months. Unlike the smile lines, the tear trough area is subjected to less motion, and filler in this area lasts longer.  You should definitely see your doctor again to see why it only lasted for 6-8 weeks.

Swelling on One Side of Mouth After Restylane - Normal?

I had restylane injected into my smile lines around my mouth yesterday. Looked great at first, but about 3hrs after injection one side of mouth started to swell and I felt a hard lump about size of fingertip on that side. Woke up VERY swollen on one side (other side minimally swollen) and mouth is being pulled into frown on that side only. I look like I have walnuts in my mouth. Is this sort of swelling normal? I saw a reputable Derm who I feel very confident in. Bruising is minimal.

A: Excessive swelling after Restylane should prompt a visit to your doctor

The sudden excess swelling you describe sounds a lot like a hematoma-- a deep blood collection.  This can occur after any filler injection, especially around the mouth where there are prominent blood vessels.  This can happen in any physician's hand, even those who are extremely experienced.  Things that can make bleeding more likely include the use of blood thinners including aspirin and ibuprofen, as well as any significant activity or exercise after the procedure.  I would suggest you see your doctor ASAP to check the area.

How to Get Rid of Hardness and Lump on One Side of Face After Restylane 5 Days Ago?

I had one syringe of restylene 5 days ago for marionette lines and little lines by corner of mouth. While not to visable my left side feels smooth and my right side has lumps upon touch. If looking straight on it is not to visable, but from the side it is. I went to the most recommended cosmetic surgeon in our area because I did not want a problem. After taking so long to finally have this done, I am upset. I am 47 and after losing 25 pounds this last year, my lines became very deep.

A: Lumpiness can be corrected after Restylane or Juvederm

First of all, I commend you for doing research before your procedure to find the most qualified physician in your area.  So often, I see patients who develop complications because the person who injects them were inexperienced.

With that said, even the most experienced of physicians can have complications.  Since it is only 5 days out, there are several reasons that could account for your asymmetric results.  Without examining you, it would be difficult to say what it is-- but common causes are:

1. from the product itself-- which may not go away by itself but can be dissolved with hyaluronidase

2. from swelling which is common after restylane or juvederm.  These are both hyaluronic acid fillers which tends to absorb water initially.  This will go away.

3. from a small hematoma or bruising under the skin.

I would see your cosmetic surgeon again to help him/her evaluate the area to see which one it is.

Best of luck.
