When gums become white and sore after the teeth whitening procedure, how long will it take to heal or return to pink again?
The white color to the gums after bleaching is a chemical irritation from the peroxide in the bleach. this is nothing to worry about and usually returns to the normal color in a few hours. This happens if the bleach gets under the barrier that was applied. There are no long term affects from a one time exposure.
I would like to whiten my teeth.
I have treated many patients over the years to whiten that have Lichen Planus. I would wait until symptoms, if any, are minimal. Custom tray whitening is good as mentioned above. However, I would also consider in office whitening like Zoom. The teeth are exposed and the gums and all other mouth tissues are protected with a barrier. This way the bleach would be prevented from irritating the mouth.
My general dentist says Crest Whitening Strips work, she recommends them. I'd love a second opinion from another dentist. Do these strips really work and get rid of stains from years of coffee!?
I feel Crest Whitestrips are an option worth considering. I include them in my whitening options to patients. I find that many patients end up using a few boxes to get the desired result. When they touch up, they need to purchase additional boxes, unlike home whitening where the trays can last for years. A good lost cost alternative to see if your teeth will lighten.
