I have a nearly golf ball-sized lipoma on my back, along my shoulder blade. What kind of doctor should I see for lipoma removal?
Lipomas can be easily removed through a smaller incision than you expect, by a skilled dermatologic surgeon, or a skilled plastic surgeon. Dermatologists (dermatologic surgeons) are experts in diseases and surgery of the skin (fat is a layer in the skin), and plastic surgeons do a lot of skin surgery as well. Choose the most careful, meticulous, experienced surgeon you can find. This can be done under local anesthesia in an outpatient (office) setting. There is no need for a hospital or general anesthesia.
I have a lipoma the size of a golf ball on my middle lower back right above my buttocks. I have never had surgery and I am self conscious of the lump and want it removed. What are the pros and cons of removal?
A true lipoma is a benign (not cancerous) growth of extra fatty tissue. Usually they are not painful, but sometimes can have extra blood vessels mixed in that can be associated with some pain or tenderness. Some lipomas grow noticeably, and some just sit there.
The pro of having one removed, is that the lump will be gone. There is a risk of recurrence, depending on the depth and shape of the lipoma. The downside is that there will be a scar and possibly a dell or indentation where the extra fatty tissue was, if it was large or there a long time.
I had a head injury when I was 14, now 21 I still have what I researched to be a Lipoma. It is rather small but I was considering having it removed by a plastic surgeon. It is only about half an inch below my hairline and I was curious to know if the incision can be made where the hair grows to mask the scar. Thanks!
I actually wrote the textbook chapter in Surgery of the Skin, 1st Ed., regarding the removal of a small, high forhead lipoma, through an incision hidden in the hairline. It is possible, but definitely technically more difficult than a small direct incision over the lipoma itself. Go to a skilled dermatologic or plastic surgeon for this procedure. Don't be surprised by a small amount of scalp numbness or tingling for a few weeks after the surgery, as some small skin nerves can be cut, but will regenerate.
