Insurance Coverage for Septoplasty

I'm 17, and my nose was broken when I got hit in the face several times during childhood. It resulted in deviation of septum, fractured nose, and breathing problems. I have Americhoice by United Healthcare Insurance without out of network benefits. Rhinoplasty wouldn't be covered, but what about the Septoplasty? Does anyone know a doctor who could perform both Rhinoplasty and have the Septoplasty covered?  In line with this, would it be a good idea to have two surgeons perform Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty (covered) separately, or just one ENT surgeon? Some mentioned it would be affordable.

A: Americhoice coverage for septoplasty You are correct that, while septoplasty be covered by insurance, the insurance company will not pay for rhinoplasty. Americhoice is a Medicaid derivative run by United Healthcare. It operates by different rules than other United products. You should consult the United web site, which is one of the better ones in the industry and to read the requirements for coverage of the septoplasty. You do not need two surgeons. Both ENT and plastic surgeons are trained to perform this operation. I disagree that the insurer is more likely to approve surgery not performed by a plastic surgeon. It has a checklist of prerequisites that the patient must meet, including non-surgical management of difficulty breathing, in order for approval to be forthcoming.

Nose Straightening During Septoplasty?

Can any slight nose-straightening be done during Septoplasty, or is that strictly Rhinoplasty?

A: Septoplasty and rhinoplasty can be performed in the same procedure While septoplasty can improve breathing, to change the shape of the nose, a rhinoplasty would be necessary. Although insurance companies with cover septoplasty or sub mucous resection, rhinoplasty is strictly cosmetic.

Septoplasty Recovery at Home Needs?

Are there any special products I need to buy after undergoing septoplasty to correct a saddle deformity, such as ice packs or over-the-counter pain relievers, general assistance? If I have a caregiver helping for a few days, what should they be aware of?

A: Home supplies after septoplasty Soft gel packs are important in the first 72 hours post op. My staff recommends bags of baby peas or corn because they contour to the shape of the face and remain cold longer than ice packs. I do not recommend OTC pain medications for the first 48 hours because many of them, including Aleve and Advil, will thin your blood and increase swelling. I do not think postoperative patients require significant caregiving after this procedure. It would be good to have someone with you for the first day or two but you will not be incapacitated.
