Septoplasty and Turbinate Reduction

my nose gets congested on 1 side then switches later. believe this is a turbinate obstruction. during a septoplasty would they remove this entirely? if not, why not?

A: Turbinate reduction to relieve nasal obstruction

The nasal turbinates function to humidify the air that we breath. The side that is humidifying tends to feel congested during that time period and the opposite side of the nose feels open. This switches every few hours and is called the nasal cycle.

Sometimes the nasal turbinates are excessively swollen and fail to respond to medications. Turbinate reduction surgery is an alternative. Removing them completely is not advisable as this can leave you with a nose that is non functional and too dry with hard dry crusts. The medical term for this is atrophic rhinitis.

Good luck

Septoplasty to Include Fixing Nose Hump?

I may have to have a Septoplasty but I also have a small dorsal hump that I want removed. I do not wish to change the shape of my nose, just to get the dorsal hump filed down in conjuction with my Septoplasty. Is that possible? Or will I have to possibly have further work done to my nose?

A: Rhinoplasty and hump reduction

Septoplasty is a procedure that is purely designed to improve your nasal breathing. There is no change in the outside appearance of your nose. Rhinoplasty reshapes the outer portion of the nose. By reducing the bump on the bridge of your nose you are electing to have rhinoplasty. There are different types of rhinoplasty. If you only with to shave down the bump on the bridge of your nose and not have any other additional changes, please make sure to communicate this to your plastic surgeon. Good luck.
