Is This Swelling or Have my Bones Set Like This?

i had a first closed rhinoplasty 6 weeks ago to remove a small hump on bridge of my nose, and also narrowing of nasal bones and had work done to change shape of tip. When my cast was removed my nose was wider than before surgery i emailed my surgeon who says it is swelling but im not so sure its been six weeks since surgery and this swelling as not reduced at all,do you think this is swelling or the way my bones have set? I had surgery abroad so not seen surgeon since surgery.

A: Swelling on the bridge of the nose often lasts for many months

Is your nose swollen vs. overly wide after hump reduction?

  1. You will have to wait at least 3 months to answer this question.
  2. I do not believe nasal exercises are necessary to bring down swelling or narrow your nose.
  3. Consult with a local plastic surgeon in about 6 weeks, the 3 month mark.

Will my Nostrils (In Time) Look More Circular Instead of the 'Pinched' Look?

I had my nose bridge narrowed and alar base reduction. Its been 14 days since my surgery and I wanted to know if its extreme swelling where the arrows are pointing. Because if this is the case, that would be great because my nostrils appear very narrow.

A: Alar reduction is often needed to decrease the width of the nostrils

Swelling after alar base reduction (narrowing of nostrils) will:

  1. Last for several months
  2. Make the nostrils temporarily look smaller in size.
  3. Can temporarily accentuate pre existing asymmetries in the nostrils

What should you do?

  1. Be patient.  Its only two weeks since your surgery.
  2. Discuss your concerns with your surgeon.

Bulbous Tip and Spreader Graft

If you narrow a bulbous tip and the nostrils, you may encounter nasal obstruction (afterwards), but that could fixed by a spreader graft. I read a spreader graft widens the middle vault. However placement of this graft pushes the side of the nose outward as well. I'm concerned the spreader graft makes my tip wider, while I want my tip narrower actually. Could there be a solution?

A: Spreader grafts typically do not widen the tip of the nose

Spreader grafts are used to:

  1. Increase a narrowed portion of the middle portion of the nose to improve breathing and appearance.
  2. Straighten a crooked nose.

Spreader grafts will not:

  1. Widen the tip as they are not placed in the tip of the nose.
  2. With one exception- if extended spreader grafts are placed to lengthen an overly shortened nose the tip can appear more bulbous.  This will be more visible over the first few months due to swelling and will subside where it is almost not perceptible.  Please discuss this with your surgeon.

Good luck with your surgery
