Did I have an adverse reaction to PDT? Face is very dry.
After Photodynamic Therapy the skin is red and scaly and it peels for up to one week. Part of the post-treatment care is the use of sunscreen and moisturizers to help manage this peeling. The use of heavier creams than usual can contribute to the formation of acne and milia. Switch to a lighter formulation of moisturizer. You may need to see your dermatologist for a mild acne treatment and to remove the milia.
The skin is also more sensitive after PDT treatment. If you use anything such as retin-a, glycolic acid, or similar products, your skin may get dry or irritated even if you were able to use these before treatment. Decrease the frequency that you use these (go from every day to every other day, for example) and see how your skin responds.
In 2004, I had Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) to treat acne. It dramatically reduced my pores. I now use Obagi NuDerm to keep my acne under control. My t-zone pores returned within the year and are now very large. Should I seek more PDT or is there a different choice to consider since I am now only wanting to treat enlarged pores? Thank you.
PDT is not an ideal choice for treating large pores. It is not long lasting even though it does work for acne. If you are very concerned about your pore size you may want to consider laser resurfacing treatments or deep chemical peels.
I have had the Levulan with IPL treatment 3 times over the last three years. The first two times were by the same office and my face reacted the same way - very red, swollen and then a peeling period for about 6/7 days. The results were amazing.
This last time was by another office and my face was barely red for an hour and there was no swelling and very little peeling - the peeling was finished after 3 days.
Do you think the last treatment was adminstered incorrectly?
It is not surprising that you had a decreased reaction on the third treatment. If the incubation periods were the same, it is likely that you have less pre-cancerous areas on the face. These were probably treated after the first two treatments (typically it takes 2 for good effect) and that is why you had a decreased reaction on the third time.
