What Circumstances Are Best for Dentures over Implants?

What are the benefits and drawbacks to implants?

A: Implant over-denture

Implant over-denture is ideal for people who have a denture that’s lose, an endless source of discomfort and frustration.  Full lower dentures are uncomfortable for most people to wear.  Placing implants to stabilize the denture is a great option.  The dentures will no longer be lose or wobbly after placing just a couple of implants.  Some of my most grateful patients are ones who have received an imlant supported denture.  Good Luck!

What Effect Does Smoking Have on Bone Grafts for Dental Implants?

My dentist told me I wasn't a candidate for dental implants because I'm a smoker.

A: Smoking and dental Implants

Dental implants are one of the most successful procedures in dentistry, with a success rate of ~95%.  Studies show that in people who smoke the success rate drops to somewhere between 50%-70%.  The body just doesn’t heal correctly when you smoke.  I’ve experienced firsthand how poorly implants work in smokers.  For that reason I decided to no longer place dental implants in people who smoke.

I’m very proud that I’ve been able to help many people quit smoking after which we successfully placed dental implants.  It feels very rewarding to not only improve someone’s oral health, but to save their life.  For people who were unable to quit smoking, we explored other plausible options.  Such as bridge work or flexi-dentures, these patients were also satisfied with their results.  They were also grateful for not having to go through the trouble of implant failure.  Good Luck!

Braces or Dental Implant?

I have one missing molar on the bottom right side of my mouth. I have one tooth that sticks out (due to a tight space) about the second tooth in front of the missing tooth. I am deciding if I should do dental implant or braces. I am 44 yrs old. I wonder if braces is a good idea since I am 44. I ownder if it will disturb my bone structure and muscle around the teeth.

A: Dental Implants and Braces

If your objective is to straighten the tooth that “sticks out,” I recommend to either get braces or Invisalign treatment before implant placement.  You should have a consultation with a dentist to find out what results you can expect.  I don’t think your age is an issue with orthodontics.  Once the tooth is straightened a dental implant can be placed in a proper position and a crown on top of it.  Good Luck!
