Is Breast Reduction a Good Idea for Me?

I'm 17, 5'2, 108lbs and wear a 30E/DDD. My breasts have caused me extreme discomfort and very poor self esteem. I am also a very serious ballet student, and they make everything so much more difficult and sometimes painful. Would I be a good candidate for breast reduction? Also, would it be possible to aim for an A cup? I have pretty small ribcage and a very short torso and I know you can't really guarantee anything but I think an A would be most proportionate.
A: Breast reduction in a 17 year old

Based on your bra size, height and weight, you would be a candidate for breast reduction.  However, many insurance companies will not approve surgery in patients under 18 and also require proof of conservative medical management.   There are limitations on how much the breasts can be reduced.  I would also caution that, although you may want an A cup now because of your dancing, this may not be the size you would opt for at a later date.  Similarly, your weight at age 17 is not necessarily a predictor of where it will be 10 years from now.

How Do You Know What Size to Tell the Surgeon when Getting a Breast Reduction? (photo)

I am 21 and i am 5'3 and about 160 to 175lbs an is has a somewhat tiny figure and have not yet had children. I have upper back pain an sagging with my breast. I am a 34O in bra size and have been sized with professional's more than once and i would like to be a D or DD but family and friends are telling me to do a C cup seeing i have not yet had children. Sizing wise what do you tell the surgent and how do you know what is the right size for you??
A: Sizing in breast reduction In young women, I generally recommend going on the smaller side as, in all likelihood, you will pick up a few pounds as you age or go through pregnancies. However, let me also say that, if your breasts are truly an "O" cup ( and I suspect that you are compensating in cup size rather going for a bra with a wider circumference) then there may be a limitation in how small the plastic surgeon can make the breasts. In cases of G+ breasts, often free nipple grafting is required and this is certainly something that you should discuss with your plastic surgeon. Best of luck. Does Having Medicare and Medigap Increase My Chances For Coverage of Breast Reduction?

I hear a lot about what is required for insurance coverage of breast reduction surgery. I also hear about how difficult it can be to find a surgeon who takes Medicare. I have both Medicare and a Medigap policy. Will this make it easier to get coverage?
A: Medicare coverage for breast reduction Medicare does cover breast reduction; if Medicare covers it, then the remaining 20% would be covered by your Medigap policy, subject to your deductible and co-payment. Each Medicare intermediary in the country has different rules. In NY, Medicare does not preauthorize any surgery so it is up to the plastic surgeon to determine whether the case is likely to be covered. Then, it is common for Medicare to request supporting documentation after the fact in order to make its decision. Patients, therefore, have to sign waiver forms agreeing to pay in the event that Medicare declines to cover the procedure.
