I'm 55yrs Old. Am I a Good Candidate for Tummy Tuck/arm Lift at Same Time?

I have excessive skin/fat on my waist and very large upper arms.

A: 5 Most important things to know about being a candidate for Tummy Tuck

1.  Combining a tummy tuck and arm lift is definitely a reasonable combination procedure to do as long as it is done by a surgeon who has done hundreds of thousands of tummy tucks who will not keep you under anesthesia too long.

2.   Two or three body contouring procedures together or body and face are reasonable.  A full face and body makeover is ot a good idea in terms of safety regarding anesthesia.

3.  It's not your chronicological age that is important it is your general health.    If you don't have any major medical problems, you will likely be a good candidate.

4.  If there is any question about your health, your plastic surgeon will have your primary care doctor write you a "clearance note" saying you have a clear bill of health for the surgery.

5.  Be more worried about the surgeon being a good candidate for you!  Do your homework.  Is the surgeon affiliated with ASPS or ASAPS?

Hope this helps.

How Are the Muscles Tightened in a Tummy Tuck?

After the tummy tuck, will my muscles respond to exercise better?

A: 5 important points about tightening muscles in a Tummy Tuck

5.  the Rectus Abdomini (your six pack) that was stretched with pregnancy or weight gain if you haven't obviously been pregnant.  It needs to be tightened.

4. The muscles are not cut, but are "Imbricated" (folded centrally and sewed to tighten) in a "north-to-south" position.

3.  If you are a  "massive weight loss" patient (classified as greater than 70 pounds) you may also have an imbrication in the "east-to-west" position as well.

2.  Be careful about procedures which are marketed as "less painful" or faster recovery without doing a muscle tightening as you may be dissatisfied with the bulge after surgery.

1. Make sure you feel comfortable with your surgeon and that he or she has tons of great B&A's (before and after photos) to show you.

How Do Doctors Minimize Dog Ears During a Tummy Tuck?

Should I be interviewing prospective surgeons about techniques they will use to avoid dog ear scarring?

A: 5 Very Useful points to know about dog ears

5.   It is a myth that dog ears come simply because of an incision being too short.

4.  An incision and thus scar can be kept as short as possible by using liposuction at the puckering ends to minimize the bulkiness of the tissue there.

3.  "Cheating" the upper flap siightly medially (toward the center) can help lower the chance or dogears.  Ask your surgeon if he does it.

2.  The laser on the laserlipo (smartLIpo) may help to tighten the skin.  Performed before the closure.

1.  Most importantly.  Make sure your surgeon has a huge number of great B&A's (before and afters) for tummy tuck pictures to show you.  And ask for patients of his with whom you could speak about the process.
