Brown Spots After IPL (Asian w/ Light Skin)

I just did IPL for sun spots today on a whim at my derm's office. I am Asian with light skin and had sun spots most noticeably on my cheeks from years of swim team (and no sunscreen). I found this site researching the after IPL treatment and care and then found out all these scary after effects! I'm SO worried now! I trust my derm is a great doctor, but I'm worried about the many more brown spots that have shown themselves where they weren't visible before. Then I'm scared by the comments that 1st treatment went well, then 2nd or 3rd left scarring, bruising, fat loss, and/or ruined skin texture. Are there any specific factors that may cause these bad side effects? I'm tempted to just stop after this one treatment but now worried that there are more spots than before? ~ Freaked and Needs Assurance

A: Brown spots after IPL IPL treatments are generally safe. It depends on the settings that were used for you skin. If you are fair skin, then you should have a better outcome than darker skin patients. Before you schedule your next treatment, see what results you get with this one. It is not unusual for skin to get darker before becoming lighter.

Considering IPL: How Essential is It That I Consult with a Doctor First?

I'm pretty certain that IPL is the appropriate remedy for my red spots (broken veins around the nose and on the cheek) and freckles. Neither are serious. The plastic surgeon's office offers IPL; so does a non-medical clinic down the street, which is less expensive.

A: consulting before the IPL

This is a significant issue in my opinion.  I could not agree more with Dr. Altman, patients need to know that seeing a qualified laser surgeon/doctor is extremely crucial.  There are so many nuances that need to be considered that some untrained doctor may not be aware of.  Please do you homework before you decide what type of spots you are treating. These benign skin issues may be more complicated than you think.

Is IPL with RF Powerful Enough to Melt Fat?

The more research I do on IPL, the more I see doctors that post and promote their practice stating the ipl does melt fat and can tighten skin. I see all doctors here on this site stating that Ipl does not melt fat. Which one is it?

A: IPL does not melt fat

IPL does NOT melt fat.  IPL is technically not Laser.  It is light based treatment that really addresses pigment issues.  Also, IPL does not tighten the skin.  Again, it mainly improves the pigment, sun damaged skin, telengiectasias, rosacea etc.  Talk to the laser surgeon thoroughly about these issues before you pay for something that may not give you the desired outcome.
