Breast lift, or mastopexy, is used to correct sagging, or ptosis, of the breast(s). There are many reasons for the ptosis and of course many different anatomical considerations when planning a corrective procedure. In general, more and more mastopexy procedures are being done with an effort to minimize the scarring. A vertical or sometimes called "lollipop" breast lift has become more popular and is being used for various breast sizes and shapes. Ultimately, which procedure is right for you depends on what your anatomy is now and what result you hope to accomplish.
I'm sort of on the verge of needing a breast lift and wondering if the scars are not worth the trade-off... what kind of incisions or techniques leave the least amount of scarring?
Marian,
As you have read there are several different types of lifts depending on the severity of the breast sagging. Obviously, any lift will leave a scar. Claims of "scarless" breast surgery are often misleading. The good news is that most of the scars fade nicely and are specifically placed to be as inconspicuous as possible. The least amount of scarring is the donut lift but most surgeons agree that this often results in a shape that is somwhat flattened across the central part of the breast. The verticle, or lollipop scar can be more versatile in shaping the breast and providing more of a lift. In general, patients are often willing to trade off a bit more of a scar for a superior shape result. Certainly if more volume is desired and implant can be placed at the time of any of the lift procedures.
