Will Septoplasty Get Rid of the Bump on my Nose?

I have a deviated nasal septum, would having a septoplasty operation straighten the external appearance of my nose if the deviation is the primary reason of the bump on my nose? thanks :)

A: Will septoplasty get rid of the bump on my nose...

If you are diagnosed with a nasal septal deviation, it means your septum has a curve to it.  During Septoplasty surgery your surgeon will remove some cartilage and straighten the remaining septum to help you breathe better.  While correcting a deviated septum can improve the base of the nose if it is causing a twist in it, a septoplasty would do nothing for the bump on your nose.  Many patients add a Rhinoplasty to their Septoplasty surgery to change the appearance of the nose.  Your surgeon will normally file down the bone for the bump to disappear and do a osteotomy to make it even straighter.

If you have a severe enough deviation most insurance companies will cover the cost of the correction of it and you would just have to pay for the addition of the Rhinoplasty.  I would schedule a consultation to discuss your options.

Septoplasty Recovery - Time, Tips, How Long?

Quite sure I need a septoplasty surgery but worried about the recovery process. I saw on realself about rhinoplasty recovery, is it similar with septplasty? What do i need to consider about recovering: downtime, medications, pain, etc? thank you so very much for your expert opinions.

A: Septoplasty Recovery Time

A nasal septoplasty is primarily performed for breathing purposes.  On occasion, a badly deviated septum can contribute to a deformity of the nose where the nose bends to one side.  In competent experienced hands, the deviated nasal septum is often easily corrected intranasally within approximately one hour.  Although surgeons differ, I place cotton in both sides of the nose and remove it the next morning in virtually all cases.

There is usually mild discomfort and stuffiness but no significant pain in most cases.  I have never needed to prescribe a narcotic pill for a septoplasty.  For a week or two there may be some stuffiness but the nose can be sprayed and easily suction cleaned by the surgeon.  There should be no appreciable downtime following a nasal septoplasty.

Does a Deviated Septum Change the Appearance of the Nose?

You can see it alot in the photo I have added, most times it's just one nostril higher then the other it seems but VERY noticable. I hate it and it hinders my quality of life. My nose was never like this until I got jumped by six guys at night time. I have breathing problems, alot of clearing my throat, congested alot.. etc Does it look Deviated? If I got a septoplasty would it fix the nostrils to where one isn't higher then the other by straightening the septum? It was never like this before. Thanks.

A: Deviated Septum Change Appearance of Nose?

When the caudal end of the nasal septum (the wall between the two nostrils), it is significantly deviated (rhe region at and just above the tip of the nose), the lower portion of the nose may be deviated to the left and the nostrils may be asymmetrical.  In these cases, an appropriate correction of the nasal septum will often create a better alignment of the nose and reduce the asymmetry of the nostrils; it even makes then appear symmetrical in many cases.  You only presented one straight-on photo.  It would be helpful if there were a base view to see the undersurface of your nostrils.
