Will Smoking Hookah Negatively Effect my Nipples During Surgery?

During breast reduction surgery will my nipples die if I have smoked hookah during 3 times during the past six months. I know the nurse said if I smoked there would be a risk but I never thought about it like this until I was at the hookah bar. Someone please help me because I am freaking out and I am scared. I've never smoked cigarettes or anything else in my entire life!

A: Nicotine is never good before surgery...

Normally when having surgery it is recommended to stop smoking four weeks before and two weeks after surgery to aviod complications.  The nicotine in cigarettes or hookah constricts blood vessels which can affect healing especially in procedures like breast reduction or tummy tuck.  The fact that you are not an everyday smoker and only smoked hookah three times should not effect your healing process as long as it has been more than one month.  It is always best not to smoke anymore of it for health reasons.  If you have any other questions or concerns I would contact your surgeon.

Breast Reduction Surgery

I'm considering a breast reduction surgery, but I want to know more about what it involves. Is just fat removed or is it breast tissue? Is skin excised, as well? How long does the procedure take?

A: Breast Reduction Surgery...

Breast Reduction is a procedure used to remove excess fat and glandular tissue from the breasts.  Skin is usually removed so there is not an excess after the procedure.  The procedure is meant for women who have large breasts and want to resolve issues such as stretched skin, rashes under breasts, poor posture, and so on.  You can have breast reduction at any age, but most doctors recomment waiting unil you're at least 18 years old.  The surgery usually takes about 4 hours, and you may return to work/school 10-14 days after the procedure.

A: How much time off after a Breast Reduction...

Breast Reduction is a procedure where the surgeon is removing excess breast tissue and skin to achieve smaller breasts.  Because the muscles are not touched there shouldn't be much pain, most patients complain of being uncomfortable.  The recommended recovery time would be one week for office jobs.  Any jobs requiring heavy lifting would need more time off, approximately two to three weeks depending on healing.  You would need to discuss your job requirements with your surgeon to find out the exactly how much recovery time is needed.
