Smart Lipo Vs. Tummy Tuck, Which am I a Candidate for? (photo)

So my orginal thought was to get a tummy tuck after i lost about 50lbs. Now i'm no where near a doctor so i sent him pictures and he recommended smart lipo. My main concern isn't so much the fat even though i'm having a hard time with this last little bit on my lower abs. My main concern is the skin.. What do you guys think? After smart lipo will my skin tighten up enough to have a flat stomach?

A: Smartlipo does not tighten the skin that much

It is impossible to make a recommendation without a full exam.  Looking and feeling your skin quality is absolutely necessary.  I purchased my Smartlipo machine after being told by the company and other physicians how it tightened the skin.  I feel that it tightens the skin is some patients a little bit.  I was very disappointed to find that the hype is mostly hype.   The reps from the laser companies (realize these machines cost about $125,000) keep pushing the "our new machine is even better" line but in the end I myself do not believe it.  The tightening effect is no more in my opinion than seen with other types of liposuction such as ultrasound assisted liposuction.  If you have very loose and damaged skin, the skin will be looser not tighter with any of these types of liposuction and you will need a tummy tuck.  Don't believe the advertising that promises tummy tuck results with smartlipo.  Ask the surgeon offering this procedure to see pictures of patients similar to you that he/she performed and not laser company stock photography.  I wish I could answer your question specifically rather than being vague however I would suggest going to see a board certified plastic surgeon who has all of the technologies available to him/her so you can get some good advice!

Liposuction Vs. SmartLipo ~ Which is Better?

I have been to two doctors, one wants to do smart lipo and one is a plastic surgeon and said smart lipo is not as good and performs only traditional liposuctions. How can I decide which is the best choice?

A: Find a plastic surgeon who does both....

One can imagine that if you only have one technique to offer, then you might advertise it as best. The docs (often not plastic surgeons) who offer smartlipo and tell you to "make sure you are having tumescent lipo done" are clearly missing the point here. How can the dermatologist who answered this thread say that smartlipo is the better procedure? Some people are going to benefit from Smartlipo and some people are going to benefit from traditional liposuction. You need to find a plastic surgeon who can offer you smartlipo, ultrasound lipo, power assisted lipo, and traditional lipo. Only when you have a doctor sitting across from you who routinely performs all types of procedures can he/she tell you why one particular method is best for you. A plastic surgeon trained in body contouring who not only does liposuction but also tummy tucks/lifts etc can tell you what will work best and give you the most honest advise. In my practice I offer all types of liposuction as well as other surgical options. Many ladies come in asking for smartlipo and they just are not good candidates for the procedure. I can educate them as to what will work for them and why and let them make an educated decision. A few miles down the road from me the emergency room doc who does smartlipo will offer it to just about anyone. The general surgeon offering smartlipo in the town next to me will offer it to just about anyone. I believe this is why you see the scores of patients unhappy with the procedure on this website. It all comes down to patient selection and educated decision making.

Smart Lipo Doctors ~ How to Find Best One?

I am about to pay for the procedure of smart lipo on my thighs. I am supposed to meet with the doctor again, i went for blood work. How do i know if this doctor is reputable? He spoke well about the proceedure and was very ressuring. He seemed very knowledgeable as well. Is there any research I can do on him to be absolutely sure though? Thank you so much!

A: Check and re-check!

In my area there is a general surgeon who tells his patients that he trained in plastic surgery and is board certified. He is board certified. He is certified in general surgery. Is he lying? No. He just didn't answer the question completely. He never did a plastic surgery residency. He never did a plastic surgery fellowship. He did take some weekend courses in Plastic Surgery. New Jersey law does not say you have to be a plastic surgeon to do liposuction. He takes patients seen in the NJ office to his "facility in Pennsylvania." Why? Is it really to save dollars on the NJ Cosmetic Tax? Is it really just because his "facility" is there? New Jersey laws state that in order to do liposuction in the office you have to have local hospital privileges. He does not have these. Many of these patients leave his office thinking he is a plastic surgeon. I have been told, "he told me he was certified." The american board of cosmetic surgery is not the same as the american board of plastic surgery. There is only one plastic surgery board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. Does this mean he is not qualified to do Smartlipo? I cannot answer that. Perhaps he does a great job. Perhaps none of his patients ever could have a complication. He does not live locally, he lives in Pennsylvania. I have been called to the local ER to take care of patients who are having complications for doctors who simply do not have privileges at the hospital for procedures they are doing. So, how do should you pick a surgeon? Be careful. Do your homework. Find out what they are certified in. Think about it: where do OBGYN's learn to do liposuction? Where do general surgeons learn to do liposuction? Where did the local ER doc doing liposuction learn how to do it? I guess she learned how to do it somewhere.....
