Treatment for Stubborn Sun Damage on Neck?

I had sun damage (brown spots) on my neck and forearms treated 2 years ago with IPL (4 treatments). My arms responded great, but my neck only lightened a little bit. Any other treatments recommended? Would a TCA peel or Fraxel be worth trying to improve the discoloration on my neck? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A: Treatment of Sun Damaged Neck Skin

Treatment of sundamaged and photoaged neck skin is always a challenge. My preferred approach is with a series of light to medium strength chemical peels coupled with topical treatments. The neck skin is not the same as facial skin and needs to be treated with care. Scarring and other problems are more common in the neck, so conservatism is best in this area. We have had good success using this combined treatment program.

Best,

Dr. Karam

Prescription Meds Before TCA Peel?

Do I need to take prescription meds before an 8% percent TCA peel?

A: Medications before TCA peel

For light peels such as an 8% TCA, the only medication that is really prescribed on a regular bases is antiviral in cases in which the patient has a history of cold sores. Otherwise, Retin-A and hydroquinone are prescribed by some physicians as a pre-treatment in patients with darker skin types.

How to Prepare for 8% TCA Peel Treatment?

What kind of preparations do I need for an 8% TCA peel and can I spot treat a few places around my mouth with it? Also, I want to do a whole face feel but I am outside everyday with my job and I'm afraid of skin darkening. What do you think?

I have bumpy skin texture and would like to smooth it out and a few recent acne marks I am afraid to spot treat because I don't want parts of my face to be in different color

A: Preparing for a light TCA Peel

There is not much you need to do to prepare for a light TCA chemical peel.  With darker skin types, hyperpigmentation is possible.  However, with such a light peel it is unlikely to see this complication even if you treat your whole face.
