Facelift Surgery

I've been considering a facelift to look younger and get rid of some of the hanging skin along my jawline. What's involved in the facelift surgery? What kind of incisions are typical? How long does the procedure take?

A: Facelift Surgery

During the facial aging process, a series of phenomena occur, which result in the characteristic appearance of aging.  As aging occurs, it occurs at a cellular level, which results in the development of fine wrinkles and hyper pigmentation.  It also occurs because of gravity.  As gravity works, facial skin sags, resulting in the characteristic appearance that we associate with aging.  This typically involves the development of nasolabial folds and jowls, with loss of the definition of the jaw line, with excess skin and fat accumulation in the neck region.  The severity of this problem varies, depending on the age of the patient.

Various options exist, depending on the severity of the deformity and how long the deformity has existed.  In mild cases of facial aging, minimal incision facelifts are a viable option which can improve the aesthetic appearance of the patient by performing minimal procedures, which are associated with rapid recovery.  In patients who are older, who have more severe deformities, a facelift may be necessary, in which excess skin is repositioned to re-accentuate the underlying bony landmarks.  This is typically done by making an incision in the area in front of your ear, which extends into the hairline superiorly and is carried around the ear lobule onto the back of the ear and then posteriorly into the hairline.  This incision separates the skin and subcutaneous tissue from the deeper facial structures.  Once this has been accomplished, the skin can be redirected to remove excess saggy skin and re-accentuate bony landmarks which are associated with the youthful appearance and physical attractiveness.  Occasionally, an additional incision is necessary on the chin, if the underlying muscles are not in continuity.  The procedure typically takes two to three hours, depending on the severity of the problem.

Many patients who require facelifts also benefit from brow lifts and upper and lower eyelid surgery at the same time, as not only the face has aged, but the upper face in the area of the eyelids has as well.  When this approach is taken, aesthetic surgery can yield dramatic results.  These procedures can be expected to take approximately two to three hours, depending on the severity of the problem and the associated procedures that are performed with it.

Swollen and Lumpy 3 Weeks Post-op Facelift/necklift - Is This Normal Healing?

i have just had face lift and necklift 3 weeks 5 days ago .  i am home from surgery abroad and my jawline looks amazing but hae quite a large lomp at the side of my right neck.does not eem to be going down any and. have noticed little lumps appearing under chin aswell. is this normal healing process i do know swelling can take months?

A: Facial swelling after a facelift is normal

It takes around 6 weeks for facial swelling to subside after a facelift.  It is helpful to massage the face or have a massage therapist or Endermologist do it for you.  If you have a fluid collection, it will need to be drained or you will have a persistent problem in this area with scarring.

I Am 76 Years Old, Can I Get A Facelift?

Since I am quite old and have lots of wrinkles will it be worth my while and how successful will the results be and how long will they last? Kelly

A: Facelift for any age

Facelifts can be performed on any age patient.  Your health determines whether or not you can tolerate the procedure.  Some 76 year old people are in much better health than 36 year old people.
