Why Do I Have No Visible Side Effects After 1 IPL?

I just had my first IPL treatment for minor acne scars, light sun spots, and mild discoloration on fair un-tanned skin. It has been 4 days since the treatment and I have no brown "coffee ground" marks, scabs, redness, irritation, or visible side effects whatsoever. Did the IPL treatment work? Is this normal?

A: What to Expect After IPL

You are right to expect to see visible changes to the skin after your IPL.  The normal appearance is that of localized dark pigment spots known as 'peppering'.  Since this was your first treatment, I would not be too discouraged but contact your physician and let them know that you did not get a response after your treatment.

Normally, in the summer, we will be conservative in our settings for IPL.  Tanned skin will pick up the light energy and can lead to more intense treatments than anticipated.  I suspect that your physician was just being careful.

Blisters to Chest, Back and Legs After IPL

One week ago, today, I had the IPL laser tx on my entire body excluding my stomach. I was not told that blisters would develop. Actually, she (the esthetician) said I would develop brown spots that would peel off in 7 days.

They do not appear to be going anywhere (on day 7 now). Some of the blisters popped. I have been back to she her and the MD. Both say I will be fine, just that the popped blistered areas will take longer to heal. ? (1)How much longer? (2)Will I have scars? Thanks.

A: Blisters After IPL: Is This Normal?

Although you will likely heal up without scarring, blistering indicates a thermal injury from the IPL and is not an appropriate end-point of IPL treatment.  While any treatment can have complications, it is always best to indicate when something didn't go as planned and explain the expectations going forward.  I would agree that silver sulfadiazine is a good topical treatment for the blisters until they heal up.

A: The Timing for IPL after Mohs Surgery

There is no contraindication for IPL after skin cancer surgery, but you will want to wait until the area has fully healed.  In addition, make sure that the IPL is done by the surgeon's office that did the reconstruction.
