When Can I Resume Exercise After Liposuction of Waist and Thighs?

I had liposuction over my saddlebags, abdomen,&outer thighs,& a little over my lower back. It has been 1 wk.I have been wearing the compression garment as instructed & had a small umbilical hernia repaired w 1 small stitch I started walking my dogs soon after the surgery. Nothing strenuous, just 40 min. Is that ok? I know I can't do any strenuous exercise for at least 2 wks I normally jog 4 miles/day, weight train,& spin on a bike. Do you think my swelling will take longer to go down?

A: When To Exercise After Liposuction and Hernia Repair?

I encourage my patients to walk right after surgery as a precaution for DVT.  I would describe this as light walking around the house or in the yard, not strenuous walking with the intent to increase your heart rate. I allow more strenuous activity at the 2-3 week mark and ask that they increase the level slowly over a period of a couple of weeks. If I repair a hernia, then I have them wait around 6 weeks before they pursue strenuous exercise. As the other doctors have mentioned, ask your surgeon what they want you to do.

Do I Need a Tummy Tuck or Will I Be Find with Just Liposuction? (photo)

Hi all! I haven't had any kids so at first I was just thinking that with lipo I would be fine, but a doctor I consulted said I will have some irregularities with just lipo and that I need a TT. I do have saggy skin and is not tight so I am afraid it won't bounce back with just lipo. I am not planning to have any kids now. Please let me know your opinion, I will be posting pictures.

A: Your best result will be tummy tuck after reaching a stable healthy weight loss.

You should lose weight to a healthy weight you can maintain; going on some crazy "fad" diet and losing to some artificially-low number you have no chance of maintaining only ruins good surgical results as you resume normal habits. If you can reduce intake and increase activity, while still eating the (healthy) things you like, you can lose weight and reach a point that will allow your plastic surgeon to give you your best surgical result.

But if your skin is "saggy and not tight" now, it will be even less so after emptying out some more of the fatty contents, so a full tummy tuck will almost certainly be necessary. Additional liposuction of other areas may further enhance your result, and can be discussed at the time of your consultation.

Liposuction alone (ANY kind, including SlimLipo, ultrasonic, etc.) will only further deflate your present abdominal skin envelope, and you've already told us about your elasticity, so don't fall prey to those who would sell you "hope" and then tell you later that you "now" need a tummy tuck. Just skip the first unnecessary step, lose that weight, and go for the tummy tuck you deserve! Best wishes!

How Much Liposuction Can Be Done at Once? Can I Have Multiple Body Areas Treated At Once?

I work out 6-7 days a week and follow a pretty strict (healthy) diet. I've had the same "trouble" spots since I was young, like my thighs and upper arms and have been considering liposuction for awhile. How much can be performed at one time? For example, could I have my upper arms, inner/outer/front thighs and facial (cheeks) performed at one time? How much is "too much?" I'm 5'3 and 115 lbs and a good candidate for this procedure.

A: Is It Safe To Treat Multiple Areas with Liposuction?

Liposuction safety is based on amount of fat/fluid removed and time in the OR. Most of us adhere to removing up to 5 liters and limiting OR/anesthesia time to 6 hours. Judging by your height and weight ( 5'3" and 115 lbs), you will not be anywhere near those limits. It appears to me that you need sculpting performed and should have no problems with multiple areas. This surgery should be performed by an experienced  Board Certified Plastic Surgeon only, in my opinion. Good luck.
