Is Hyperpigmentation After Chemical Peel Common?

After 4 weeks from a medium Chemical Peel, I'm starting to get large brownish, grayish spots all over my face. I've done everything including using sunscreen that my doctor has recommended.

Is this common? What can be done? I feel like I've defeated my purpose.

A: Pigmentation Problems after Chemical Peel

Hyperpigmentation after skin resurfacing procedures are rare in light-skin people but relatively common in people with darker skin types. The good news is that hyperpigmentation is treatable and will likely result in significant improvement, if not full resolution. Contact your physician to get started on topical products which may include skin bleaching ingredients (hydroquinone etc) and Vitamin A (i.e. tretinoin).

Is It Safe to Have Chemical Peel While on Accutane?

I purchased a Chemical peel off eBay but I was using Accutane about a month or 2 ago. I only took 10 pills of it, does that make any difference?

A: Not worth the risk

I would not recommend a facial peel so soon after accutane, even if you only took it for a couple of weeks. Wait a minimum of 6 months.

Chemical Peel for Asian Skin?

I am Filipino. I am planning on getting a Chemical peel soon for my acne. Is it good for Asian skin? I've looked at before and after pictures, but they are all Caucasian, so I don't know if i should go through with it. I've never done them before. I'm worried about the pigmentation that people have said can happen to Asian skin afterwards. My acne isn't super bad. Its just the first layer of skin that needs to be removed. Any thoughts?

A: Be careful with skin resurfacing

In general, any resurfacing option (laser, peel, dermabrasion) will pose a higher risk of pigmentation changes (hyper and hypo pigmentation) in people with darker skin. Although it is possible to resurface Asian skin, you want to go to somebody experienced with this. A thorough preparation and after care will be important to minimize the risks.
