Can Photofacials Be Used on Individuals with Melasma?

I have white skin, medium tone, and tan fairly easy but can burn. I have a dark strip on my cheekbones (under where sunglasses would rest) and I think it was caused by sun exposure combined with bad sunscreen.

My dermatologist called what I have "melasma" but I thought that was only for people that have been pregnant or menopausal and neither is the case for me. I'm interested in doing a photofacial to remove this discoloration as well as my acne scarring. Would you recommend it in my case?

A: Melasma and IPL

We perform IPL as well as glycolic peels in our office.  For patients with melasma we always recommend the glycolic peels in conjunction with hydroquinone bleaching creams.  They work better in our experience, than the laser for this condition.  The peels can also help acne.

If you are taking an oral contraceptive that can worsen melasma.  Sun protection including a hat (really) and sunscreen of spf 30 or higher is imperative.

Hope that helps.

Is It Safe to Have PhotoFacial on Healing Facial Scars?

Three weeks ago, I had enlarged sebaceous glands cauterized. The resulting scabs have fallen off, some naturally and many others prematurely by accident. Now I have several atrophic, reddish scars that are still healing. I would like to get a photo facial to remove general redness in my face. Would an IPL interrupt the healing process of my scars and thereby cause permanent scarring? Should I keep the scars moist (antibiotics gel) or dry? As you can imagine, I very worried. Thank you!!!

A: IPL with healing scars

An IPL treatment after recent trauma such as electrocautery or liquid nitrogen can cause blistering or crusting.  Definitely wait 2 months to get an IPL.  Sun protection is important while your areas are healing, as well as before and after an IPL photofacial.  It can take 4-12 weeks for the area you had treated to heal well, so don't worry yet if the areas look red or indented.

Photofacial After Laser Resurfacing?

I had laser resurfacing 12 weeks ago, and would like to have Photofacials to even out the complexion. Is it too soon? Or can I use a whitening gel with 2% hydroquinone to help even skin tone and not worry about irreversible black spots? My skin type is light American Irish.

A: Photofacial excellent for evening skin tone 12 weeks after laser resurfacing

Topical hydroquinone and retin A are frequently used to rediuce pigmentation and even skin tone after Laser resurfacing.

Avoid further ab;lative laser resurfacing-you are still healing and getting the benefits of your laser resyurfacing.

IPL or Phoytofacial safe and effective to treat pigment and even skin tonme twelve weeks after laser resurfacing. I usualy have patients use the bleaching regimen between photofacials, stopping retin A a week before the IPL.
