Am I a Better Candidate for Chin Liposuction or Thermage?

I am a 30 yr old woman who is an average weight. Even at my skinniest (size zero) I've always had a double chin but I notice it's bigger when I'm heavier. My doctor advised against liposuction, saying the problem was excess tissue, not fat. Thermage was recommended instead. I'm hesitant to try Thermage because many reviews say it was expensive and didn't work. Judging from the photo I've attached would I be a good candidate for chin liposuction or Thermage? Thanks!

A: Thermage will not tighten your neck skin significantly

Your neck looks good in the Photo. I would need to examine you to determine whether Liposuction would be of benefit.

In my experience over many years Thermage and other external skin tightening machines produce very disappointing results. Most patients have to be shown a before and after photo to see results.

Be sure to consult a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who in fact is able to do Liposuction. Avoid the "If your only tool is a hammer (Thermage Machine) the whole world looks like a nail!"

If on examination you have a palpable pad of fat under your chin, then Liposuction , done expertly, will help.

For small areas of excess skin and fat in patients like you I have had excellent results with Laser Lipo using Slim Lipo Laser Assisted Liposuction. The benefit is smaller instrumentation and skin tightening in this delicate area.

Lumpiness/tightness Under Chin Appeared on the 9th Day and is Getting Worse?

Had submental lipo 11 days ago. The first week recovery was going really well and there was minimal swelling under my chin, however, 2 days ago, it became more swollen and now, when I touch it, I feel some bumps. It also hurts more when I try to massage it. Is this abnormal? I want to continue to wear my neckstrap but the consultant took it away from me and said the doctor doesn't want me to wear it anymore. Is there anything I can do to help the situation?

A: Lumpiness /tightness of Neck 9 days after Chin Liposuction needs to be evaluated by your doctor

If new swelling or lumps occur a week to 10 days after Chin or Neck Liposuction you may have developed bleeding (Hematoma) or fluid collection (Seroma) or other problem such as infection.

These can be treated but the doctor, not consultant or nurse, needs to examine you.

If there is blood or fluid under the skin it may need to be removed by needle aspiration.

If there is no fluid collection and the lumps are just healing debris from the procedure, then massage and the Chin Strap will help, but this must be decided by your doctor.

If your doctor will not address this to your satisfaction seek a second opinion

A: I aks my patients to wait 3 weeks before vigorous exercise after Chin or Neck Liposuction, ask your doctor

Vigorous exercise increases heart rate and blood flow. After Liposuction of the Chin or neck or any area, blood vessels are dilated and new blood vessels form to speed healing.

Increasing blood flow and heart rate could lead to bleeding or increased swelling during the first 2 or 3 weeks so I suggest waiting 3 weeks.

If after three weeks the Chin or Neck area that was treated with Liposuction feels flush or tight or swells obviously wait longer.

Be sure to ask your doctor for his/her recommendation
