What is the Typical Recovery from a Lower Body Lift?

I'm considering whether to get a tummy tuck or body lift and maybe some skin reduction on thighs if possible. I am currently a 157lb., 6'1", 27-year-old male, and I have lost ~100-110 lbs. over the past two years. I have some excess skin that has not responded to weight loss. It's worst in the abdomen/butt/thighs (mostly on the sides of the body). My major concerns are recovery time and danger of complications from the operation (is a body lift significantly more dangerous than a tummy tuck)? I wouldn't be able to miss more than 2 weeks of work. Thanks.

A: Lower body lift recovery time.

Thank you for your photos.  It appears you have a relatively small amount of skin which actually hangs although the skin may be loose in other areas.  If you are concerned about the loose/hanging skin of your abdomen, sides and the buttock area then a lower body lift, which lifts and rejuvenates the entire trunk would give you the best result.  I routinely do this as a single operation in approximately 4 hours.  There is one night in the hospital and recovery is 2 - 4 weeks.  Recovery is longer for the lower body lift vs the tummy tuck as the surgery is more extensive, but the overall correction of the trunk is better with the lower body lift.  If you work at a desk then returning to work in 2 weeks should be possible.  Complication rates are low if proper pre operative and post operative instructions, especially about walking, are followed.

Procedures to Tighten Loose Skin from Massive Weight Loss?

I'm a male 23 years old. I was 300 lbs. and now I'm 185 lbs. The problem is I have excess skin just above the penis area and around my stomach. Is there any exercise I can do to get rid of it? I work out a lot. What procedures are available to get rid of this? It’s really upsetting me. Please can you help and tell me how I can tighten this area? Thank you!

A: Tightening abdominal and pubic area after weight loss.

You have done everything right: lost weight, and got yourself on a good diet and exercise regiment.  The loose skin of your abdomen and pubic area is the skin which was not able to snap back after weight loss.  An abdominoplasty will correct the abdomen and pubic skin excess or a lower body lift will correct the tissue excess of your trunk and pubic area to smooth and contour these areas.  Your surgeon will suggest what procedure would be best tailored to you after an examination.

Is Liposuction Part of the Body Lift Procedure?

Is liposuction part of the body lift procedure?

A: Body lift combined with Liposuction is possible.

A body lift involves an incision around the entire trunk and elevating tissue flaps so they can be resected then tightened.  This extensive surgery interrupts the normal blood supply to the edges of the tissue which need to be sutured together.  Adding liposuction to these tissue flaps could futher reduce the blood supply to the tissues and result in poor wound healing and tissue death.  Areas away for the surgical site can be contoured with liposuction at the same time safely.  Another factor to consider it that a body lift procedure is a lengthy operation and  longer surgeries can have higher complications rates.  Its always better to error on the safe side even if it means the liposuction is done at a future time.  A detailed consultation with your plastic surgeon can help plan out the stages required for you to have a safe procedure with the best results.
