How Noticeable Are the Scars After an Otoplasty?

I want a permanent fix for my "dumbo ears" (big and sticking out) because I'm sick of wearing hats to cover them up and it seems like otoplasty is my only option...but I am afraid I'll end up more self-conscious about my ears if there are scars there plus everyone will know I had ear surgery.
What I want to know is - Where do they cut into you during ear surgery and are the scars really noticeable?

A: Otoplasty scars are invisible

Otoplasty is performed from behind the ear, so you should not expect to have ANY visible scars after surgery. This makes Otoplasty a very popular procedure with patients that have protruding ears, and can really improve social confidence in youngsters and adults alike.

Procedure for Ear Reduction and Cost?

I want to make my ears a lot smaller, and I was just wondering how the procedure goes. And if so, how much would it cost?

A: Smaller ears straightforward

Ears can be made smaller in nearly every aspect. The size of the ear, the size of the earlobe, as well as how much the ear protrudes from the face -- all aspects can be reduced in a straightforward fashion.

The technique used depends upon what exactly you want your ears to look like, and this should be discussed with your plastic surgeon. The important thing is that you want your ears to be SYMMETRIC and NATURAL APPEARING after the procedure, and if you go to someone who has ample experience in otoplasty / ear reduction, you should be very happy once you are healed.

The procedure is outpatient, and typically requires your ears to be bandaged for 2-3 days. A realistic cost is in the $2000-5000 range.

Cartilage Ear Scars After Otoplasty

I had otoplasty performed for protruding ears years ago. I am left with cartilage "scars" on both anterior antihelixes. On the left, the antihelix fold is so sharply bent that the overlying skin appears white. On the right there are small nodules on the antihelix fold. Incisions and sutures were done posteriorly so I am not sure how this happened? What can be done? The surgery was done 15 years ago.

A: Simple fix for unsightly results after remote otoplasty

In addition to Dr. Young's insightful comments, I would add that I have seen "old" otoplasty deformities corrected quite simply with direct incision overlying the crease and nodules, and then excision of the sharp cartilage edges. The incision on the ear heals beautifully, and often the sharp crease and nodules are gone too! Good luck.
