When are external incisions needed for a Septoplasty?

I understand it is rare to need incisions on the outside of the nose during a Septoplasty. What conditions would need it? And if that were the case, would I need scar revision surgery later on?

A: External incisions for septoplasty

Septoplasty is one of the most common operations worldwide, primarily to improve nasal breathing, congestion, or snoring. Typically, septoplasty does not involve external incisions. Incisions are normally placed inside the nostrils, and surgeons will use stitches that dissolve. Routine septoplasty does not alter the appearance of the nose, as the surgery is on the inside of the nose. Occasionally, plastic surgeons may use an external incision for septoplasty. External incisions may be used of revision or complicated septoplasty procedures. The external incision heals very well and generally unnoticeable. After a comprehensive evaluation can a surgeon help determine appropriate options for you. Best of luck.

Do I Have a Deviated Septum?

My nose is crooked. I feel my septum is deviated as well and its making a bit harder for me to breath properly. I just want to know if the septum is deviated and if I have a septoplasty will that make the crooked nose better or do I need a complete rhinoplasty? pictures are included.

A: Deviated Septum and Breathing Difficulty

Hi jensen2201,

Based on the single photograph and difficulty breathing through the nose, you likely have a deviated septum. However, only after an evaluation can a specialist help determine (1) the reason your nose appears the way it does, and (2) the reason for your nasal congestion.

For patients with a deviated septum and nasal obstruction, a routine septoplasty does not change the appearance of the nose. A rhinoplasty would be required to help straighten both the external and internal nose. Only after a comprehensive evaluation can one help determine appropriate options for you. Best of luck.

Thick, Red Mucus After Septoplasty

3 weeks ago I had Septoplasty, I had packing removed 1 week after, and 2 weeks after I had exam and it was all OK, I can breath much better now. What im worried about I'm still having dark red, really thick mucus (almost looks like membrane) coming through mouth mostly every couple days, until mucus comes out it feels like sinus is blocked, when it comes out it feels perfectly fine. Is that normal and if there is something I should do about that or it is something I should be worried about?

A: Nasal Discharge after Septoplasty

Hi filip1331,

Nasal discharge after septoplasty is common and expected. The discharge may be bloody, thick, or colored and  gradually improves over time. Saline nasal rinses and ointment may help reduce the discharge. Speak with your septoplasty surgeon. Only after a comprehensive evaluation can he/she help determine appropriate options for you. Best of luck.
