Sagging Jowls - Is a Mid-Face Lift Needed with Lower Lift?

I am 54, but look slightly younger. I don't mind the normal aging around my eyes, etc. but my sagging jowls bother me. My Plastic Surgeon says he would not recommend having a lower face lift without at least also doing a mid-face lift, as well as a brow lift. Now he has agreed he would feel comfortable doing the lift without a brow lift, but says he would definitely recommend a mid-face lift with the lower face lift. Is it really necessary to also have a mid face lift with a lower face lift?

A: combining surgeries may not be necessary if your goals are limited to jowling

if jowling is your conly concern,  a mini facelift may be sufficient.  Your surgeon will discuss what each procedure can add to your overall results.  however if your goals are limited to the jowl area, you may be able to obtain the results you want with a more limited surgery.  In my practice, I find the mini-facelift procedure able  to meet many of my patient's goals for jowling and neck lift improvement if they don't desire more extensive procedures.

Neck Swelling After Exercise - Will This Ruin my Facelift Results?

I am 59 years old and am 11 weeks post-op after having a lower facelift, forehead lift, and upper & lower eyelid surgery. Around 8 weeks post-op, I began vigorous exercise again with my doctor's approval. However, my neck swells under my chin after exercise, and the swelling lasts a long time(often until the next day). Is this normal? Also, will having my neck swell and decrease in size repeatedly compromise the results of my lower facelift? Should I slow down my exercise?

A: Neck Swelling with Exercise Months after Facelift Surgery

Hi Ready123 in Atlanta, GA,

As other face lift surgeons stated, swelling from exercise at 8 weeks may not compromise your face lift results.

The neck area may have decreased lymphatic drainage after plastic surgery, which promotes fluid accumulation and edema. This swelling with exercise is more common under the chin or upper neck due to gravity. To help reduce neck swelling, you may consider decreasing salt intake, applying ice, light compression with wrap, or gentle massage. Worrisome hematoma, blood clots, are typically seen only within the first fews days after cosmetic surgery. Speak with your face lift surgeon regarding these or any concerns. Best of luck.

Sutures for Lower Facelift and Neck Lift

The plastic surgeon I am considering for a lower facelift and neck lift indicates he uses a rolling sutures around the ear and behind the tragus. Is this the typical way sutures are done for same surgery, or isn't it? Or are the fine, tiny sutures some doctors do, produce a more invisible suture line? This piece of the surgery is extremely important to me. I need to find out of this is the norm. Thanks

A: Incision Type for Face & Neck Lift Sutures Around the Ear

This is a very common question, however it's not very critical for plastic surgery face lift results.

The plastic surgeon performing your face lift and neck lift will place the appropriate number of stitches. There isn't a magical or normal number, suture material, or length of incision. The longer or bigger the incision, then the more stitches will be required. Some face lift surgeons prefer absorbable stitches, some prefer permanent, while others use both types. Plastic surgeons generally don't count the number of stitches either, as it is not really a factor for face lift surgery. The SMAS treatment under skin is more important.

Speak about these issues with your cosmetic surgeon to help alleviate your concerns.
