Is it Normal to Harvest Fat but Not Transfer the Fat Until a Later Date?

Is it ever the standard of care to harvest fat for fat grafting and not inject at the same session? My doctor wants to freeze the fat and inject it in two months.

A: Fat Transfer Timing after Harvest

As other fat transfer specialists have stated, a patient's own fat may be frozen and stored for use at a later date. However, it's always preferred to transfer and inject the fat immediately after obtaining the fat. The fat is healthier and in much better shape to survive after the injection. Frozen fat is a higher chance of absorption and other problems. Touch-up fat injections may still be required with any fat transfer technique. Only after a comprehensive evaluation can a fat transfer surgeon help determine appropriate options for you. Best of luck.

Fat Transfer Vs Revision Facelift or Both? (Photos)

Facelift 6 week check seems to be a pocket or jowl on Left side by mouth that was quite loose once the swelling went down(I can fold it down). Right side has a lot of scar tissue from previous injury & Bell's palsy so is still swollen. Turkey neck also coming back. Skin very inelastic from weight loss and age (62). Cheek areas are very flat. Would fat transfer alone work or would a temporary product like Restylane be better to see how it would look before fat transfer/surg? PS is board cert.

A: More Plastic Surgery with Fat injections after Facelift

Hi SO,

Thank you for your question. Generally, most plastic surgeons will wait at least 6 months or longer before considering any further facial surgery. While the skin and facial tissue heals relatively heals pretty quickly after a face or neck lift, swelling can normally last for long time. In addition, scar tissue from prior injury and history of Bell's facial paralysis also contribute to challenges with plastic surgery.

Regarding fat transfer, some plastic surgeons will perform fat transfer at the time of the face lift or brow lift. If no fat injections were performed initially, then one must wait several months to allow the final swelling to resolve in order to obtain better fat graft results.

Some options to consider in the meantime to improve skin health is a skin care program, chemical peels, and/or laser treatments. Only after a comprehensive evaluation can a plastic surgeon help determine appropriate options for you. Best of luck.

Fat Injection in Lip Caused Large Hard Lump

One year ago I had fat transfer to my face and my lips. On the lower lip there was always a small bulge just below the lip line, but it wasn't noticeable. About 2 months ago I developed a large hard lump in my lower lip. There are a couple of very small hard places in my upper lip, however they do not show. THe one on my lower lip is very noticeable and looks like a bee sting or like I have been hit. What is the best resolution for this problem

A: Lump after Fat Injection to Lip

Lumps after lip enhancement injections can happen with any lip injection material (fat, hyaluronic acid, collagen, etc) or surgeon / specialist. Most lumps are temporary and due to swelling. Small bumps or lumps in the lips after cosmetic injection augmentation typically resolve in a few days, but possibly couple weeks. The lip bumps may be the product material, bruising / swelling, or combination. Less commonly scar tissue or infection may cause a bump or lump.

Your plastic surgeon or dermatologist may massage the lips to help smooth the area. Alternatively, hyaluronidase may be injected into the bump to help dissolve the material (Restylane, Juvederm). Lumps from the material itself generally resolve as your body naturally dissolves the product. Speak to your lip injector regarding any concerns you may have. Best of luck.
