Lipoma Removal - Would Surgery Require an Overnight Hospital Stay?

I have a lipoma on the back of my neck and am planning on having it removed. Can I leave the hospital the same day as the surgery or would I have to stay overnight?

A: Lipoma removal does not require hospitalization

A lipoma of the back is a very common diagnosis.  Surgical removal of a lipoma under the skin can readily be done under local anesthesia as an out-patient.  Depending on the size, it can be sometimes be done in a well equiped doctor's office, but certainly can easily be performed in the out-patient department of a hospital or an ambulatory surgery center.

Is Lipoma Removal on the Mouth Area Possible?

I have a Lipoma in my mouth on the back side of my lip. How would you suggest getting rid of that ?

A: Removal of a lipoma of the mouth is possible

While removal of a lipoma of the lips or just inside the lips is certainly possible, it is rare to have a lipoma in that location.  Whatever the lump is, it is probably a good idea to have it removed so that it can be evaluated microscopically.

What is a Lipoma?

What exactly is lipoma?  Should I be worried if I have one?

A: Lipoma

Lipoma is a cluster of fat cells. There are really two kinds: one is diffuse which I characterize as fluffy and the other, an angiolipoma is encapsulated and feels quite distinct. The fluffy one is best treated by liposuction, the encapsulated typically requires a small incision for removal. Any lipoma can come back. All are sent for pathologic evaluation when excised.
