How Much Weight Can I Lose from Tummy Tuck Surgery?

How much weight (in loose skin/tissue) will I lose from a tummy tuck?

A: Even a lot of skin that is removed does not weigh very much.

Most people are surprised to find out that tummy tuck which removes skin and fat in  the lower abdomen does not make a huge difference in weight.

The tissues in our body that have the most weight are the muscles and the organs.  The skin and fat is removed tummy tuck is not a particularly heavy or dense tissue.

While a heavier person will likely have more weight  removed than a more slender person the amount of weight loss is not dramatic.  We as plastic surgeons have to use our judgment about the amount of skin and fat the that can be removed. Very heavy patients can be higher risk for surgery.

Ideal candidates may have a lot of loose hanging skin but the layer of skin and fat that are removed generally weigh just a few pounds.

How Long Does Tummy Tuck Surgery Swelling Last?

I had a tummy tuck about 3 weeks ago.  How long should I expect the swelling to last?

A: Swelling after a tummy tuck

Thank you for your question.

It is very common to get swollen in the lower abdomen after tummy tuck.  There are a number of factors involved.  In the early phase the abdomen may seem bloated because many of the narcotics used for pain can slow down the GI tract and cause bloating or  constipation.  This will generally resolve itself within a few weeks.

In the second phase, the tissues above the lower abdominal scar become swollen because the scar tissue stops fluid from migrating downwards.  The peak of the scar  tissue is about 12 weeks after surgery.  This can also be the peak of the puffiness.  As the scar tissue matures over 6 to 12 months the fluid in the lower abdomen can travel more normally  and the swelling diminishes. While most patients will see a dramatic decrease in swelling about 12 weeks after surgery, the swelling can even improve out to a year.

Lastly, the final healing process of the tummy tuck is the abdominal wall stretching again as it decides how tight it can remain after muscle tightening.  Even after tightening, the abdominal wall will relax somewhat and find a new equilibrium. As one might expect slender people tend to stay flatter than people to carry more weight inside the abdomen.

I hope this helps to answer your question.

I'm Only 19, Does a Breast Lift Seem "Out of the Question"? (photo)

Somehow my breast have become droopy, saggy, and completely different. I was thinking of getting the surgery to lift them...any advice? I want them to be perky and higher...is this possible with breast like mine? :)

A: 19 year old breastlift

If you are healthy and a good surgical candidate, breast lift would achieve your goals of improved fullness and shape. Women are born with asymmetries and all kinds of breast/nipple shapes and sizes. I would recommend you meet with a Board Certified plastic surgeon to discuss your options and look at some representative pre and postoperative photos to better understand the procedure.
