Did I Intensify my Lactic Peel when I Applied Moisturizer with Retinol? I had a lactic chemical peel and accidentally applied my normal moisturizer the next morning (Neutrogena Healthy Skin with retinol). I believe this intensified the peel from superficial towards medium. I had swelling which is almost gone and am now on day 4 and starting to peel. Skin is redder than previous days and feels very tight. Is this normal? I was given a sage and citrus moisturizer to apply(plus other items). I want to apply a different moisturizer. What would be good?
A: Single application of retinol probably didn't affect the peel

Redness and tightness, peeling around day 4... these are all normal steps to experience after a peel.  A single application of a moisturizer with retinol probably didn't affect the peel much at all, and it certainly didn't make it into a medium depth peel, so don't worry about that.  Rest easy.

A sage and citrus moisturizer, however, may be something that is irritating your skin further... or you could be having an allergic reaction to it.  I would recommend changing to a gentle, unscented moisturizer like Cetaphil, Vanicream, or Dove for best results.

Risk of Genital Herpes Outbreak from Chemical Peel?

Is it necessary to take a anti viral medication for a chemical (glycolic) peel if you are infected with gential herpes? If so how many days prior to the peel should you begin the medication?

A: Herpes virus prophylaxis for facial chemical peels

When having a light or medium depth chemical peel of the face, it's important to take precautions to minimize the chance of herpes outbreak across the peeled skin of the face. This is done by taking acyclovir or valcyclovir medication beginning on the day of the peel and finishing a full 7 - 10 day course.

However, genital herpes do not pose a risk for facial infection, unless you were to touch the area of infection in the genitals and then touch the area of facial peel without washing your hands. This should be avoided.

Patients undergoing light chemical peels (glycolic alone) need to take the medication only if they've had a history of "cold sores" or other herpes infection of the face.

All patients undergoing medium depth peels should take the medication, whether they have a history of cold sores or not.
