Suffered from acne for 8 yrs. Started off with oily skin and light acne and has progressed to moderate acne (back & face). Now my skin has become more oily - to a point where you can see visible patches of surface oil on my nose and forehead with a huge increse in blackheads. I have been prescribed oxytetracycline, lymecycline, benzyl peroxide (2.5/5) and topical retinoids (adapaline). The condition has still deteriorated in the sense of visable scarring. I still cannot get a referal.
Once acne begins to scar (and preferably before), one should definitely consider isotretinoin (Accutane). This medication is still the gold standard for acne treatment, and works better than any other regimen for most patients. I would recommend visiting a dermatologist to discuss the risks and benefits of treatment. All medications, including isotretinoin, have risks associated, and should be taken under medical guidance.
I treat many patients with this medication, and the level of satisfaction is second to none for most patients.
I've come off accutane, and want to get my scars treated before they mature. Will results not be as good if I don't treat the scars right away? How long should i wait for treatment, i was only on accutane for 3 weeks, low dose 20mg.
3 weeks of 20mg/day of Accutane is a negligible dose, and one highly unlikely to affect either the acne, or to influence scarring.
From an Accutane perspective, this low dose should not prohibit you from undergoing elective surgical procedures if you only took 20 mg for 3 weeks.
However, it sounds as if you are still having active acne. I do not recommend attempting to treat acne scarring until the active acne is under control. You'll be wasting money and time, as more scarring is likely to come unless the acne is controlled.
It's very important to tackle the acne first, then move on to acne scarring.
I'm 29, 53kg, & took Accutane, 6 months, low dose 20mg every 2nd day, course ended April 2010. Can I get Zoom whitening, May 2010? Or must I wait because of Accutane? If so, how long should I wait? Also I want to get a tattoo how long should I wait after accutane treatment?
Accutane has been known to cause delayed wound healing and increased scarring, so it's best to avoid procedures that might ultimately lead to scarring... like tattoos. I recommend waiting 6 months after stopping Accutane before getting a tattoo. Tattoos normally don't scar, but in the event of an infection, they can, and Accutane could make the scarring worse.
Teeth whitening is okay, though. I am not aware of any contraindications for this procedure, as scarring should not be an issue.
