Is a full tummy tuck ideally used on patients who have recently lost a lot more weight rather than a patient who gains and looses weight from a typical pregnancy. Is a mini tummy tuck sufficient for pregnancy stretch marks and loose skin?
It would be a rare patient that a mini tummy tuck will take care of the majority of their stretch marks. If you have few stretch marks and just a little excess skin and muscle laxity below the umbilicus then a mini abdominoplasty may be a good procedure for you. I find that less than about 1 in 20 abdominoplasty patients that come into my office would be a good mini abdominoplasty candidate.

When are mini tummy tucks possible without the need of general anesthesia? http://www.pelosimedicalcenter.com/tummytuck_faq.htm
The vast majority of Board Certified Plastic Surgeons use a general anesthetic for both full and mini abdominoplasty, as do I. Even with a mini abdominoplasty in my practice I find that to do the appropriate liposuction and muscle tightening it is much easier and more comfortable for the patient to use a general anesthetic. If you do choose to have one of these procedures with sedation and local just make sure you are seeing a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon as I know of several doctors that are doing these in their offices because they are unqualified and can not get hospital or surgery center privelages.

44 yr old female, no children, eat healthy and workout several times a week - but would like to get rid of accumulation of fat around torso (love handles and abdominal area).I am probably about 10-15 lbs over my "ideal" weight. Am concerned about the lumpy bumpy problem I hear about with lipo, but not sure that I really need a tummy tuck. Also always concerned about the health risk of any surgery, wondering if one procedure is "safer" than the other.
The first question is whether you need a tummy tuck. If your skin tone is reasonable and you don't have a lot of stretch marks, you may do just fine with liposuction alone (if you can grap a roll and shake it up and down, you may be better to have a tummy tuck). Contour irregularities sometimes happen with liposuction. The most important factor in preventing them is the skill and experience of your surgeon, so you want to go to an experienced plastic surgeon. I also use ultrasound, which I think helps, but it is secondary to surgical proficiency. Both procedures, lipo and tummy tuck, can be very safely performed by an experienced surgeon in an accredited facility. I personally prefer an unconscious IV sedation for both procedures because it is so safe and avoids some of the things that go with a traditional anesthetic (intubation, gas, paralysis, and a ventilator). If you are in doubt, go with the liposuction. You can always return for a tummy tuck. Incidentally, a "mini-tummy tuck" is usually not sufficient. If you need a tummy tuck, you are usually better to have a full tummy tuck. I talk much more about this on my website.
