Do I Need Liposuction or a Tummy Tuck? Is Cryolipo or Thermage an Option?

I had my son a year ago and I hope to get back to my pre-pregnancy body if possible. I gained 36 lbs and lost most of it except for 2 lbs. The extra weight is stuck on my upper and lower abdomen, and flanks. I didn't get stretch marks but my skin seems a little looser than before. I wouldn't trade this tummy for a big scar from a tummy tuck unless it was my best option. Should I go for liposuction or would it leave me flabby? I was also considering Cryolipo and thermage which are non invasive.

A: Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck

From your photos, several parameters are noted.  First, on standing, you have no stretch marks and mild to moderate excess of fat in the central area extending from your ribs to your panty line.  You also have excess fat in your flanks (love handles).  On bending from the hips, the same can be seen with minimal laxity.  On bending at the waist, you have multiple folds which everyone can reproduce with this manuver.  You will likely get good results from liposuction alone in these areas, and should consider one of the "skin tightening" methods, such as VASER liposuction.  A tummy tuck should not be needed.

Can Thermage Help with the Fat Pads Under the Eyes?

I have puffy eyes due to the fat pads under my eyes.I had this all my life, I was told by two dr that the only thing I could do was to have them removed. but now I was told that thermage would help. Is this true? I am 42 and would like to put off getting cut.

A: Thermage is ineffective as a treatment for lower eyelid bags

Lower eyelid bags causing a chronically tired appearance is most commonly the result of adipose tissue (fat) that has migrated to beneath the eyelid surface from the eye socket. The treatment for this condition is to either surgically remove the fat or to reposition it back into the socket. The results are permanent. A nonsurgical bu temporary fix for this problem can be achieved by masking the protruding fat with injections of a soft tissue filler around it. This is a temporary solution because the filler will absorb and you will need to repeat the injections to maintain the results.

Occassionaly, a significant amount of loose lower lid skin will mimic the appearance of bags similar to those caused by fat. Thermage is relatively new technology that tightens to a degree loose skin. However, the amount of loose skin that would mimic lower lid bags would be beyond the capabilities of Thermage to tighten. This amount of skin would once again require a surgical removal or possibly laser skin resurfacing.
