Is gynecomastia surgery (male breast reduction) just a version of liposuction for male breasts?
If there is an actual breast gland behind the nipple/areolar complex, the gland will have to be excised (cut out). Usually some liposuction is necessary as well to achieve a smooth contour unless you have virtually no fat on your chest. Sometimes in one who is over-weight, liposuction is the main part of the procedure.
Are there diet restrictions or suggestions that I should be aware of in the weeks leading up to male breast reduction surgery? Are there any exercises that I should or shouldn't do?
Male breat surgery is needed for a condition called gynecomastia or excess breast tissue in males. This is caused most commonly by hormonal changes during puberty and usually goes away. But if it persists, it can be very embarrassing. Make sure you have a long talk with your surgeon about the scar around the lower part of the areolar and the limitations after surgery. Discuss the risks, such as an abnormal contour. You will probably have an Ace bandage or a binder of some sort after surgery, and you may have a small drain. You need to be informed about this. It is important to minimize any bleeding during surgery, so for a minimum of two weeks, do not take any of the following: aspirin, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, fish oil, Omega-3 supplements, supplimental garlic, or vitamin E or a multi-vitamin containing E. You may resume these a week after surgery. I advise my patients to do no perctoralis exercises for 10 days after surgery according to how it goes. Also for a week after surgery, do not get hot or do aerobic exercises. These can cause excessive swelling or even bleeding.

What are the options to get rid of the excess tissue?
The causes of gynecomastia are several from hormone imbalance to certain drugs to puberty. Of course, excess weight gain can cause the breast to enlarge with everything else. But the most common cause by far is excess estrogen. Men have excess testosterone during puberty, a common time for gynecomastia to occur, and this is because testosterone is aromatized into estrogen, and this causes gynecomastia in some people. If the estrogen is high enough, most men will develop breast enlargement.
Body builders who are on anabolic steroids often get gynecomastia because of the conversion of the excess testosterone into estrogen. Now most have learned to take Arimidex or a similar medication, which is a medication that prevents the formation of estrogen from testosterone.
Lab tests shuld be ordered by yhour physician to determine the total and free testosterone, DHT (dihydrotestosterone) and estrogen. This will indicate hormone levels that are valuable in determining the cause.
The options or reduce the breast tissue is surgery. This usually requires an incision at the lower border of the areolar where there is a color change. Scars can be inconspicuous. Unfortunately, too often too much tissue is removed leaving a depression where the excess tissue was removed. The procedure requires some liposuction in some individuals to feather the edges of the tissue removed. Gynecomastia surgery can be done with either local anesthesia in some people or general anesthesia.
Gynecomastia is very embarrassing for some men and the surgery is quite appreciated.
