What Can I Do to Get Rid of This Scar on my Forehead?

I've ha this scar on my forehead for about a year from a weight hitting my head and I hate it.. it really bothers me a lot and I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to get rid of it?

A: Scar on Forehead

Thanks for the picture of your scar included in with your question! It shows a slightly hyperpigmented (dark colored) scar located over the middle of your forehead; it is horizontally/transversely positioned and is parallel to relaxed skin tension lines (frown lines) which are normal across your forehead (just raise your eyebrows to see them). The importance of this orientation means that in time it will blend into the normal lines and creases across your forehead and become virtually impossible to see.

If the scar is not significantly depressed, I would suggest use of hydroquinone (bleaching cream) and aggressive use of sunblock (spf at least 30).

However, if the scar is depressed or casts a shadow in certain light, surgical re-excision and meticulous closure by a (facial) plastic surgeon may help fill in the area. Given the pigmentation in your skin type, I would be cautious with the use of any laser as further "injury" to the area (via laser) may cause hyperpigmentation to recur or even worsen.

Hope this helps! BTW, time is your best friend as well.

Searching for Good Scar Revision Surgeon for Bound Down Scars

I had surgery in Nov. 2009. It was all to be done from inside the mouth, but two small incisions 3-4 mm were outside in the nasal labial folds. Seeking a surgeon who can revise bound-down scars on the face. The fascia was removed, but I think there are small balls left & they tether my skin to the muscle. It puckers, ugly creases, lack of mobility & heartbreak. I would love to have them revised & all fascia out. I have good skin otherwise, don't smoke, use Retin-A, sunblock & heal well.

A: Scars

Sounds like a scar release/revision....not sure where you are in Florida, best facial surgeon I know in the state is Dr. Steve Prendiville in Fort Myers. Otherwise, maybe you could take a close up photo to post, one that preserves your confidentiality but outlines the issues.

Good Luck!

How Can I Get Rid of Old Scars?

Can an old scar be removed? I had a surgical operation when I was 6 years old in my tummy and now I am 23 years old. The scar on my tummy is about 5 inches long. I also have a scar from chickenpox on my face. Prevention or treatment of the scar while it's healing isn't an option anymore. Is it possible that these can be removed? What kind of treatment would you recommend and how much will it cost? How long would the treatment be?

A: Scar Management

As I tell all of my patients, those with previous scars and those who I am planning on operating on, scars are permanent, but it is a plastic surgeon's passion to construct or repair current scars in a concealing manner. In a sense, hide them so that although they are present, they are not obvious to the naked eye.

Surgical repair techniques include, but are not limited to, excision and re-repair, Z-plasty utilization, dermabrasion, laser resurfacing and even make-up concealer.

Discuss all the options above with your board certified plastic surgeon and ask them about the cost, which can range from a few hundred dollars to 3-4 thousand depending on location, extent and time/technique necessary to repair.

I hope this helps!
