Can a Chin Implant Be Problematic if I Have a Tooth Implant Already?

I am very seriously considering a chin implant, but I am concerned about possible pain or future problems because I have a tooth implant in my lower right jaw. This tooth implant was a mistake that I was convinced to put in by a dentist many years ago. It has caused intermittant pain and problems for me over the years which is another reason i'm hesitant about proceeding w/the chin implant now. Any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated.

A: Chin implant and dental work

There should be no relationship between your dental issues and placement of a chin implant unless there is residual infection or abscess formation associated with the dental.  If your dentist can assure you that there is no infection in a properly placed implant, the chin implant will not affect it.

Is a Chin Implant a Good Option for Me?

I've had TMJ for years. I've also had a weak chin. I was diagnosed with ETD in my left ear a year ago but was provided no cause. My jaw joint on the left side is where I have mild locking and inflammation. My ear is still plugged and I am going to start diagnosis again next week with a different ENT. Is it possible that jaw surgery may be my best option if the TMJ inflammation is causing the ETD? How do I protect my ear and get a chin? Can jaw surgery correct both? I have a bite guard already.

A: Chin implant and TMJ

From evaluation of your photos I don't believe you have a weak chin so aesthetically would not recommend a chin implant.  Placement of a chin implant would have no effect on either your TMJ pain or eustachian tube dysfunction.

Appropriate Time for Revision of Chin Implant?

I had a XL chin implant 5 weeks ago, and it's too large. I want to reduce the size to a medium. When is a good time to perform the revision? Also, if implant was placed via intra-oral surgery, is it advisable to have revision done via the submental approach as it is supposed to be less prone to complications? Thank you.

A: Probably still some swelling

Chin implantation usually causes some persistant swelling, especially with placement of a large implant.  I would wait a minimum of three months before making any decisions about changing the size of the implant.  Regarding approach, I prefer the submental approach but this is a matter to discuss with your surgeon as personal preferences differ.
