I'm thinking about an arm lift and just wondering what to expect. What's the recovery like after the arm lift? What can I expect in terms of downtime and scarring?
An Arm Lift (Brachioplasty) is an excellent procedure to remove loose skin and fat due to weight loss and age. The excess skin, often referred to as "bat wings", is simply removed by an excision that runs on the inside of your arm. Unfortunately, this is not a scarless procedure and may result in a large wide scar. It is placed on the inside of the arm so that with your arms to your sides, it cannot be seen.
Recovery from an arm lift involves at least 1 week of downtime. Most patients do not complain of significant pain. You will be placed in a compressive wrap and use oral pain medication. After 1 week you will begin normal activity. I generally ask my patients to wait 3 weeks to begin exercise and heavy activity.
I gather that the incision for a brachioplasty can be along the inner arm, or on the back of the arm. If the latter, is the incision dead centre down the back of the arm, or at the junction of the inner arm and the back of the arm?
While an arm lift (brachioplasty) can be an excellent procedure to recontour the arm and remove those unwanted "bat wings" it certainly does not come without a price....a scar. Only very few patients are candidates for simply liposuction only. The scars for an arm lift are best located on the inner aspect of the arm, just below the biceps muscle groove. This is performed in this location so that it is concealed when you have your arms to your sides. Incisions placed on the back of the arm are visible at all times and should be avoided. Be sure to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon.
