What is the procedure for MRI scans and people who have titanium dental implants?
No worries with MRI's of patients with dental implants. The contain no iron or ferrous metals and are non-magnetic. You won't be thrown across the room, teeth first!
Could taking Fosamax or other osteoporosis medications decrease the amount of risk?
Actually, you want avoid those drugs. They can cause you to lose the implants. Just see your hygienist every three months, brush and floss. What really counts is how they look on the Xray 4 months after they have been placed and that the forces of the bridge work is loaded properly on the implants.
What other procedures might be advised because missing teeth for a smile makeover? Will gums need surgery too? Are dental implants low maintenance and fairly low risk for long term complications?
Implants are the best way to replace missing teeth. Period!! Maintenance is a piece of cake (or a piece of floss, in this case.) They have a success rate of over 95%, close to 99% on the lower jaw!
In some case on the upper front teeth with patients that have a high lip line that shows their gum line, a three unit permanent bridge may be the better option if the implant will cause a higher gum line compared to the adjacent teeth. Although, soft tissue and bone grafts can be done to correct this if done 6 months BEFORE the implant is placed.
