Alloderm Infections

Does Anyone Know of Infections After Using Alloderm?

A: Alloderm infections

I have used Alloderm, Strattice and Surgimend in breast reconstruction, and I find that Alloderm seems to incorporate best, especially if there is a problem in breast healing after a mastectomy. That is, if the skin healing is problematic, the Alloderm seems to maintain integrity and resist infection better. However, personal experiences may vary from surgeon to surgeon and among patients.

Like any foreign material, Alloderm (or any dermal matrix) can become infected. I have also seen a redness in the dependent (lower) part of the breast that may not be an infection at all, but may represent a hypersensitivity reaction or simply dependent swelling of the soft tissue. If you experience redness like this, it is important to immediately see your surgeon to make sure there is not an infection. Many infections can respond to antibiotics alone, but some infections may require removal of the Alloderm and an associated implant/tissue expander.

Alloderm for Breast Reconstruction?

This is being tauted widely as the best breast reconstruction procedure out there for women to get through this terrifying and tramatic experience.

Unfortunately, many doctors do NOT know how to do this procedure yet, hence it is not widely available leaving patients to not be able to have it as an option insurance-wise. I have never heard anyone say anything about Alloderm not being sterile and not wanting to put it near an implant. Can you please elaborate?

A: Better breast reconstructions with Alloderm

AlloDerm product is human donor skin that has been treated to not cause rejection, leaving only a dermal collagen matrix. The dermal collagen matrix is incorporated by the hosts own body tissues. It has significantly improved results in breast reconstruction and also in complex aesthetic cases with recurrent intractable capsular contractures.

Alloderm or Strattrice - Which is Better for Breast Reconstruction?

What determines if a surgeon uses Alloderm or Strattice for breast reconstruction? Alloderm was used in my reconstruction and I had persistant draining issues until it was removed. I am reluctant to try alloderm again and I was wondering if Strattrice would be an option or if it too had the potential for causing excess drainage.

A: Both materials can cause drainage

Alloderm (from human tissue) and Strattice (from pig tissue) are both acellular biologic materials used in breast reconstruction to reinforce coverage for a breast implant or tissue expander.  Both are useful and both can lead to prolonged drainage for which drains are indicated for at least 7-10 days after surgery.  The choice of one or the other depends on several factors including the mechanical properties which differ between the two.

Your surgeon will help to sort out the best option for your needs.
