Is It Possible To Have Moles Removed By Laser?

I have several small, round, and flat moles on my face(11+). I've had them for over 15 years and I want them all to be gone. Is it possible to have them remove by laser? I am Asian so I tend to scar easily on my body, but not my face. Also, would a dermatologist remove them or facial plastic surgeon?

A: Never laser moles

While there have been published, scientifically sound studies demonstrating the ability to remove pigment with lasers and perhaps the moles themselves, I would strongly suggest that it not be something you should do on a regular basis.  I know the physicians who have performed the research and they do not even offer this is a solution to their patients except in the extremely rare case of Giant Congenital Hairy Nevi.  Super rare condition.

While lasers work great for removing many types of pigment from the skin, patients should be extremely careful with moles and lasers. As a general rule, the pigment in moles should not be lasered, as this has the potential to cover up or camouflage a melanoma.

Now, if it is something called a seborrheic keratosis in the setting of dermatosis papulosa nigra, then electrocautery can work. However, an evaluation by a dermatologist is important to determine its true identity before treatment.

Birthmark Excision Surgery in 3 Days.

I'm having a round black birthmark(a little larger than a pencil eraser) removed from my cheek in a couple of days by a plastic surgeon. He said that it should just leave thin line scar less noticeable than the mole but I'm still really nervous about the cosmetic results. What can I expect after it heals?

A: Scars are difficult to predict

First, there are no guarantees when it comes to scars.  After the surgery, the scar will be firm and ropy for a few days to a few weeks.  This is normal and will settle down if repaired well.  There will likely be some redness that will fade with time.  Anywhere from days to months, but it will fade.

Good luck

Does Mole Removal by Electrocautery Cause Bad Scarring?

I've been self conscious of a small black-dotted mole (sharp tip of a pencil) between my eyebrows. I went to an esthetician for consultation. She recommended electrocautery and that its a minor procedure. She said either there will be no scar or that it will be very minimal. Now I understand that it will not be sent to pathology. I just wanted to know if the procedure will cause bad scarring or anything undesirable. Can anyone give me some sort of advice? Thank you very much.

A: Electrocautery is not for moles

If it is truly a mole, it should not be removed by electrocautery.  If it is something called a seborrheic keratosis, then electrocautery does work.  However, an evaluation by a dermatologist is important to determine its true identity before treatment.
