A mini-tummy tuck usually involves liposuction, a small amount of skin resection and tightening the abdominal muscles that are stretched apart usually by pregnancy. It is not ideal in cases of major skin excess; then one should opt for a full tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). Liposuction is useful for excess fat, but doesn't tighten the muscle and doesn't remove excess skin as a tummy tuck does, so it depends on your situation. A consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon would be the best route to decide which would work better for you.
I had a major weight loss in my teens. I'm slender but I have loose fat on my stomach below and above my belly button. Is a mini tummy tuck right for me? You can't even notice my that stomach looks tiny in a shirt, but I won't dare wear a bikini.
After major weight loss, typically the problem is not just the loose muscles that a mini-abdominoplasty can address, but it is the large amount of excess skin. It much more common in these situations that a full abdominoplasty or even a circumferential lower body lift would better suit you. It would be best to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon to see what they say after examining you.
Is a mini tummy tuck less painful than a full, regular tummy tuck?
The post-operative pain experienced by patients undergoing these procedures tends to be quite similar. In fact, sometimes it appears that patients who undergo the mini-tummy tuck have more pain, likely due to the increase use of liposuction in that procedure. Both procedures remove excess skin and fat as well as tighten the loose underlying muscles. It is this muscle tightening that creates the majority of pain, so despite a shorter incision, the pain of the mini-tummy tuck is coming from the muscle tightening.
