I recently got two crown lengthing/crowns. I waited a month between the lengthening and crown. It's two weeks later and I'm still throbbing in pain. It's hyper sensitive to cold. Now he says I need a root canal, without even looking in my mouth. I'm suspicious that two teeth suddenly need canals and suspect the process. These new crowns are all ceramic (not metal on ceramic) and I read the cement used might be the issue. I'm leaning towards getting a second opinion.
Often the teeth can experience the increased sensitivity after cementation of any crown. It can be caused by previous preparation of the tooth, leakage under the temporary crown, possible infection. But in your case it sounds more like this also can be triggered by crown lengthening as well. The zone apical to the cemento-enamel junction can be extremely sensitive and react to cold. You should definitely ask for 2nd opinion and clear the actual reasons for the throbbing pain.
13 year old boy, injured his tooth and broke it 1/2 way up. It was suggested that he have a crown. We are left with the decision of a plastic or porcelain crown. Is it worth paying the money for the porcelain at this age? Or better to let him grow with the plastic and get the porcelain in a few years?
Based on your description, your son had most likely after the injury of the tooth the "root canal" treatment. In order to prevent the future bacterial leakage inside the canal and re-infectioning of the tooth, it has to be covered by the permanent crown withing next 3 months. Otherwise, the risk of re-doing root canal filling will be very high and success of endodontic retreatment will not be high according to the research. In the situation like that, it will be a better option to cover to tooth with permanently cemented porcelain crown.
Are there any disadvantages in that type of a crown?
Cerec crowns which are performed at the same visit as the research shows have the same strength and marginal integrity. However, aesthetically Cerec crowns will never look as lab fabricated crowns due to additional glaze, variety of shades, etc. Even with advanced advertising same day crowns the specialists always tend towards lab fabricated all-ceramic crowns due to strength, better marginal adaptation, possible variability with shades, contour, shape. The human artistic touch will always will make the crown look natural.
